The USS Cod (SS-224) is docked in Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio and is maintained and operated as a memorial to the more than 3900 submariners who lost their lives during the 100 year history of the United States Navy Submarine Force.

These images mix from two tours of the Cod. I came back with black & white film the 2nd time to see if some features would look better. The whole ship is amazing, including the need to climb the actual ladders into and out of the sub. I must of watched too much "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" back in the day ...

Film camera was the EOS 1v and digital by EOS 5DIII. EXIF data is available from the Flickr host site by clicking the URL titles. The B&W results scanned from Kodak Ilford-HP5+ ISO-400.

The USS Cod, one of two WW2 submarines I've had the privilege to tour. The other is the USS Becuna which is a museum ship moored in the Delaware river in Philadelphia, next to the historic cruiser USS Olympia. Nice photos.

Thank you rmorrison1116! I didn't know about Philadelphia. I've also been on the Clamagore in Charleston and the Bowfin in Pearl Harbor. I believe the Cob is considered the closest to still being operational.

Glad you enjoyed the tour. A good friend of mine is on the volunteer crew that keeps the Cod in shape and they take pride in their efforts. Did you happen to see the Martini glass on the Cod's scoreboard? It represents an event during WWII when the the Cod responded to a distress call from a Dutch submarine that had run aground on a sandbar. They rescued the crew but their attempts to free the sub from the sandbar failed and they had to destroy the sub to prevent it from falling into Japanese hands. To this day, surviving members of the Dutch crew, their families and Dutch dignitaries gather at the Cod on the anniversary of the event to remember and celebrate.

Thank you av8nbuff! I was aware of the rescue of the Dutch sub, but not of the anniversary meeting. Another bit of background making this sub interesting.

Thanks Pat! The Cod is maintained by a private foundation. Rather than headphones they have some sections throughout the boat with recorded details available and a well written pamphlet / guide. I've been on-board now a few times on different days and times and have had the place virtually to myself, offering a different experience than the Bowfin tour.

Thanks flathead27ford! The sub tour seems to have a bit more of "experience" to it. The 3-year old in me can reach out and turn dials and flip switches. The 51-year old can bang his head on nearly everything low hanging ... And it doesn't take much to sense the terror of being underwater at depth in such a boat in battle and wondering if and how you'll ever get home again ...

Visited the Cod years ago when I lived in Cleveland.
Your photos are even better than the visit.
Good job.
