Reading the post about people selling Nikon D850 on ebay for high price. My question if someone buy one of those, does the warranty transfer? I know Nikon policy do not transfer the warranty to new owner but do they have some way to get around that?

When I checked Ebay on those D850s, the cameras were being sold as new. After snickering over the prices I didn’t bother to investigate whether they were from a Nikon authorized dealer or not. It would sure be silly for someone to seriously overpay for a camera that didn’t even come with a warranty....but the world is full of fools.

I have never over paid for a camera. Those folks on ebay should be ashamed that work on the GAS of photographers. NEVER, NEVER, overpay for a camera. PERIOD. Wait to get it from a authorized NIKON dealer. Authorized Nikon dealers at NOT ALLOWED to charge more than the list price, or they risk losing their dealership.

The answer is NO. Nikon warranty is only valid to the original owner.

Not quite true. If the original owner did not complete the warranty registration, the registration could be completed by the second (new) owner.

In that case, the warranty is to the first registered owner, which is how they work.

Yes, it is true. If you read their warranty policy, it requires a copy of the original sales receipt. Even if the original owner didn't register it, the second owner would have no warranty.
You don't have to register a camera to get the warranty, but you must have the original sales receipt (or copy), with your name on it. As far as lenses go, you have to register it to get the 5 yr warranty.

The warranty is only good for the person whose name is on the original sales receipt.

Wow! I wish I could afford the D850, But than again maybe Ill just dig up that box I have in the back yard. A friend of mine told them down at the club about his box in the back yard. The next morning his garden was all turned over and he didn't even have to lift his shovel.

So these overpriced D850 come with warranty or not? Without warranty the D850 is one of the most risky camera to buy. The reason? there aren't many of them out there yet to be sure that they don't have inherit problems. They offer very good value for the money and doing so the manufacturer must do some cost cutting. Doing cost cutting in production is nothing wrong but in the beginning there is higher chance of having defective product.

When I have a question about something offered for sale on eBay, I ask the seller - I'm not sure who else would know. So far all we've accomplished is determining the seller has to be someone authorized by Nikon to sell in your country.

I don't know that yet but I know he said the camera comes with warranty card and sales receipt in buyer's name. But I thought authorized dealers are not allowed to sell for any significantly higher or lower price than the list price.
