If money were really not an issue then one would just buy both, some great glass and perhaps a Sony or two also...

I switched from the D3 to the D4s to the D5. The ones I skipped were because I felt they added nothing for me, a sports action shooter. The D5 was a game changer for me. The D850 the same. My D500 doubles as my point n shoot! Best of luck.

Were the 4 more megapixels in the D5 the main reason to upgrade over the D4s for you?

Not even faintly. My main reason for the upgrade was for the new focusing system with its own processor. I couldn't even tell you the MP unless I looked it up. I have found the D5 to be a stellar camera for my work -- sports action, well worth the upgrade $. FWIW, the reason I upgraded from the D810 to the D850 was that the new body is much better suited for sports work as a backup to the D5. Best of luck.
