As you all know, I just purchased the canon 5D Mark IV. Questioning my decision. Should I have gone with the Nikon D850? This post isn't meant to be Canon vs Nikon but rather just for information by comparison on the two cameras. I still can return the Mark IV and get the D850 when they are available again. I have made the comparison on B&H and am still undecided. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Thanks. Vince.

IMHO your question is much like asking if you should buy a Honda Accord or a Toyota Camry. The reason for your indecision is that both cameras do essentially the same thing. They can take great pictures if you learn how to use them. I have a 5DMk4 and I'm very happy with it. If I was a Nikon user I no doubt would say the same thing about the D850.

Good comparison. I own a Toyota 2001 4Runner with over 275 miles. Only repair I've made was one U-Joint. Wife drives a Camry. I use a Nikon D500 and she the Sony a6000. We have a Porshce 986 and I have a 2011 Harley Davidson Street Glide. I like my D500 the best of my toys (of course after my wfie LOL).

Normally, a lens collection would guide such a decision.
Since you have questioned your decision, and the 850 is the option, you won't be satisfied until you have one.
No doubt, you will be happy with it.

I agree with Kmg. However, you must read Scott Kelby's article about why he switched from Canon to Nikon and back again before making your decision. The problem is that this was written over two years ago and there are new cameras on the market. I'd love to know his opinion of the D850 vs. Canons best.

You asked for opinions so I will give mine - you are wasting time even thinking about this. Get out and shoot. I guarantee you the 5DMkIV is probably more of technology than you can adequately use. The camera is just a tool - shoot!

I would choose the D850 just to be on the leading edge of the hobby. Sounds like changing lens inventory from Canon to Nikon will not be a big problem for you. Go with the best according to most reviewers and get the D850 while you can. I'll bet you'll be very pleased with your decision.

If you are a professional Photographer who makes more than 50% of your income from photography then buy the most expensive camera you can afford if on the other hand you are a hobbyist with little talent and creative skills buy a point and shoot.

Sharpshooter - based on the question, I'm guessing you already know that you want the D850. IMHO the reasons don't matter, as you will always have that nagging feeling the 5D Mk IV was a mistake. Life is too short - go for the D850 and have some fun.

This particular issue is something ONLY you can decide. Nonsense aside, how does it feel in your hands. Have you been able to physically compare the feel of both? Are the controls to your liking? Best of luck.

Vince, whatever you decide, I hope you will let us know how it shakes out and how you like/dislike whichever camera you decide to keep.

If you are switching from Canon to D850 and you want to keep it simple, contact Adarama to work out a trade. I’ve done this a number of times for lenses. The last lens I traded in (Nikon 18-200) they gave me more than I expected. Used the credit towards the Tamron 18-400mm.

If it is possible to rent a Nikon d 850 while you have the Canon 5D Mark IV (still in the return period) that might help you to make your decision.
As for finding a Nikon d 850 to buy- have you checked out Best Buy? They sometimes have cameras that other stores (internet or mortar/brick) don't. Case in point- I was able to pick up a Fuji X-T2 and a Nikon d 7500 from them while B&H and Adorama had none. Worth a try. Good luck.
