I use one on my D7100. It is a heavy package, but for portrait mode, it is invaluable. Incredible for fireworks......

I disagree - grips can make smaller bodies a lot more usable, in the hand, espcially when using some longer lenses.
Yeah, but, Richard ... have you ever handled a D5500?
It's smaller than ALL, but TWO, of my bridges ... the Canon PS SX-30 IS, and PS SX-40 HS ...
I mean, this thing is tiny!!! ... I doubt there's even one made for it ...
Probably, Nikon brought it out to compete with Canon's SL1 ...
Only thing different, is the D5500 has the flip screen ... (and now the SL2 does, too ... not to be outdone) ...

Do you have the Nikon one, or a third-party one?
Bill ... ever have any problems with the beeper on that D7100?
Mine's gone silent on AF ....
Though, it works, when you reset it from low to high, or vice-versa ...

Richard ... doubt very much whether ANYONE would try to put a 150-600 lens on a D5500 ...
The sheer weight of it ... would pull the thing off ...
I mean - this thing is even smaller than a bridge ....
If you have a lens like that, you'd find a bigger, more suitable camera to put it on, trust me ...

Chris, this is quite an amusing question! Let me clarify.
If you'd been here on the Hog from the start, conversations used to go like this...., how about a canon 6D? NAW!!! I've got HUMUMGUS MITS!!! I need a BIG camera...., those wimpy little offerings are for small children or maybe women, they just fumble around in my BIG hands!!! LoL
AND guess what? Only a half a decade later some of those BIG mitted giants are advocating Mirror-Less!!!
Funny how suddenly tiny cameras with tiny lenses are the rage and suddenly are just fine!!!
Do you see the irony?!?!
BUT to answer your question, NO, I've never put a grip on a camera. I've used my cameras with very big lenses and they handle just fine without a grip, so never saw a need for one. Battery life has always been enough.
THAT said, I do shoot with a 1Dx among others, it has it's own grip built in. Do I like it? Can't say, the grip doesn't come off to be able to make a comparison. It IS what it IS!!! LoL
SS
Never found the use for a battery grip.

I use one on both my D7000 and D7100. Neither grip is by Nikon, both cost much less and both work well. I like the shutter release and controls in the grips when holding the cameras in portrait mode. I also like the additional shooting time that the extra battery in the grip provides.
Yes. I had motor drives on my film cameras. Fm, Fe2. ECT. My hands are large and I notice that they tired and cramped with the dslr and much better with the battery grips. I my case it is worth the extra cost.i shoot a lot. This weekend as example over 2000 pics submitted 45 for prints a uploaded 450 to 4 separate online galleries. Very busy weekend.

Tried it. Didn't see the need. Sold it with the camera.

Aha! A 70-200 in the cargo pants and you are ready.
Yes, I use one with my T1i, and a padded hand strap.
