Does the camera matter?

Let's think about the things a good P&S can NOT do well.

1. Shoot in low light at decent shutter speeds with very little noise.
2. Shoot flying birds at extreme telephoto settings (autofocus is ineffective compared to DSLRs)
3. Shoot with ultra wide lenses.
4. Shoot with polarizing filters (most of them anyway)
5. Take images with very limited depth of field.
6. And you will find that poster sized prints are not as good as from a DSLR, regardless what Ken Rockwell says.

I have taken many great shots with my 5 compact cameras, but these are the reasons I now use a Nikon D90.

Getting back to the original question, "Does the camera matter"? Yes. Some people who like to argue have 52 posts without even posting one thread, Hmmmmm? Seems that goes along with being, "In Hiding".

Does it Mielke? Look who's been getting off on righteous egotistical dogma about what THEIR DSLR can do and putting down anything else.

That's right. I'm in hiding because I haven't posted a thread; yet. I've been on here 3 weeks. Perfect logic. What does that have to do with anything? Maybe it's you that's arguing Mr. expert pro-sumer.

I don't think anyone said! that the camera did not matter, at least not me. While true a better camera will not make a better photographer, out of someone who has no clue about photography. Shutter, Aperture, ISO, Light, and Shadow are all terms that need to be understood thoroughly, including how and when to use any combination to make a photograph. Not including a good general knowledge about composition.

I am Fly Fisherman also, my skill and knowledge is what really counts in catching a trout. But a good fly rod brings out the best of my skills, and a greater pleasure in casting a fly. I’ve tried to teach many people how to fly cast, some learn quickly and very well. Others never get past hooking themselves, in the seat of their pants.

So it is with photography; some develop the necessary knowledge, and skills quickly. Others do not, and no matter how good or expensive the camera, it will never make their pictures any better.

Well sure the camera matters…. but it is also true that
really good photos can be taken with anything. Hell,
I know a fellow with and old cardboard Brownie box that
he converted for 120 film…. and does some nice stuff!
Use what you have and do the best you can… and most of
all: have fun doing it!

there is also lomography, which has almost a cult following. for those who don't know there is a cheap $10 poorly made plastic camera called the holga that can produce some very bizarre and interesting work. fixed focus, fixed apeture, not a tight seal so light gets in from the back, yet has a devoted followers for the look it produces. besides as a young bill murray said in a movie from the early 80"s about summer camp( i hate what age is doing to my memory) It just doesn't matter, it just doesn't matter cause all the really hot girls will still go out only with the guys who shoot leicas and drive around in porsches." or something to that effect. Meatballs, I just rembered the name. now if i could only rember who i am?

Lomography is an anti-technology aesthetic and is closely related to those who do "serious" street photography on cell phones. Ironically, the cell phone cameras are getting close to the point and shoots in quality.

If we accept photography as a creative art form, it is hypocritical to insist on the highest technical standards in the photographs themselves. Those images are not competing for the cover of Outdoor Photographer, after all.

Creative art form...that's the direction I'd like to follow in photography.

I contacted bobmielke and we agreed to call a truce. And I apologized for not responding better than I did.

I can take beautiful photos with a P&S camera. I've grown to want more out of my camera than a point & shoot can provide. The sensor size of a P&S is too small for low light sensitivity. I want the advantage of adding filters to my lenses. I want 39-51 focal points in my viewfinder to control exact sharpness for control of depth of field and composition. I want automatic bracketing with control over the number of frames shot in a sequence and the programmable difference between frames. I want specialized Micr/macro lenses that allow 1:1 or closer magnification. I want wireless shutter releases for long tripod exposures.

To do all this I need a DSLR with a full set of features. I've outgrown the capabilities of a P&S in my creative work. :)

 Well said and thoughtful. We all have our camera of choice not because of what the label says but instead what do we want and can do with it.

I don't take that at all as to what his camera can do. I take it as to his such advanced and long learned craft. What he can and wants to do with his camera. I have a good quality DSLR and mine can't do half of what Bob's can, not because the features are not on mine it's because I know where I want to go with photography and I hope to one day have half the knowledge as Bob to use my equipment nearly as well as he does.

Holy what lens do you have on that camera in your avatar? I don't know if I would have the strenght to use it. Just need to know.
