As for the equipment, the only thing I can think of is they have it set in a way they think the picture taker can point and shoot and she wont have to worry slow shutters, high ISO etc. If the event is in a venue they know, like their home, it may have some merit.

For kids parties, I'd rather pay somebody to host the party and I'd take the pictures.

UPDATE.

Thanks for the replies, they are all pretty much what I had thought. She actually responded on my post on the other site. She gave an explanation. Though that raises other questions.

It seems the last time she hired another photographer to shoot an even that she was participating in and not able to photograph herself, she found that afterwards she did not like his processing (Lightroom). So she asked for a redo or for the image files so she could reprocess them from Raw herself. But he said he did not keep any of her images on his camera or computer. So all she could get were the "bad" file processed images. Seems this is a trust issue now and she just wants someone to shoot it with her camera and leave it to her to process to her own liking. Makes sense but there are still all the issues that we've pointed out. As I said originally, I don't know this Photographer-Customer. And I'm certainly not offering my services. I just found it a curious question. Actually she may get an offer on the other site. Some daring photographers there it seems. Thanks for reading and giving your comments.

Then just get the RAW files and be done with it.

She should take her own photos.

Hmmmm. Did you actually read my entire two postings on this? How can she shoot her self; she was to be one of the subjects of the shoot. I said it was unusual!

Good points.

On that shoot and turn over film. I did that once for an event. Some out of town College was having an alumni party and gathering at a place that I happened to work at at that time. They asked the institution that I worked if they could supply a photographer. To make a long story short. I shot the event and was paid $200 for about an hour and a half of work. They just wanted me to shoot it and give them the film. I think I shot about two or three 35mm cassettes. It was a good thing my employer paid me to do it instead of the actual customer because they turned out to be jerks and did not pay for the event until nearly a year later! As you might know most businesses operate on a 30 day billing cycle. I never got to see any of the photographs I took. Perhaps they were awful and that is why they took so long to pay.

This was posted to another Blog I read and Participate in - I posted back to the author some sarcasm and said it was weird. What does the UHH think:

"Good morning everyone!!! Would it be unproffessional to hire a photographer and ask that they use my equipment, i.e., my camera, strobes, lighting, backdrops etc? I'm hosting my 4 & 5 year old toddlers birthdays in one day and I will be so busy and need pictures taken. Just wanted to find out before I ask around."

I don't even know the person who posted this, but it sure is the first time I ever heard or thought of such a question or situation. It is a new one on me. Anyone ever heard this one before or have suggestions for her?

I doubt any professional would accept a job under those conditions.

Maybe the hirer wanted to take credit for the hired photographers work and be able to show the exif data for his equipment.

I would think someone considering the job could simply say give me a memory card and and I will hand it back at the end when payment is made.

The only reason I could think of would be slight RGB variations between various branded cameras, but you can fix that in Photoshop. Maybe they're trying to avoid that step? Otherwise let the other photographer take the shots with their own equipment and get the memory cards from them immediately after the shoot.

Sort of like asking a mechanic to come fix your car with your tools.

No, but if the person seeking the photographer was a professional and had say medium format or top end equipment and wanted to insure high quality photos with proper lighting, I can understand. They may want to spend time at the birthday setting up shots which you can't do if you are taking the photos. More words in the request would have helped.

Not really. I always developed everything I shot, even when working for another photographer on a big event.

The one thing I learned early on was to keep my hobbies and my job two distinct parts of my life. Now, after retiring 12 years ago at age 55, I think it was the right decision ... for me.
