Just used Nikon 80-400mm G on a D500 in Africa
Sharp as a tack
Very fast autofocus in early morning and early evening light
120-600mm equivalent on the D500
You could of at least shared a few examples of the shots.
Hope to see them soon.

I need the opinion of some of you who have used these lenses. I have a Nikon D500 and D800. My longest lens is a Nikon 18-300mm Dx which I use for my D500 as a walk around lens. There are occasions I need a longer lens, e.g. moonshot, birds on flight, sports. If I could, I’d like to use an FX lens for my D800. My main consideration is sharpness at near maximum focal length. My choices are: Nikon 200-500, Sigma 150-600 contemporary or sports, Tamron 150-600. Is there any other? What do you think is the best value for the money if it were you? Or buy the new Tamron 18-400 for half the price? It is a DX lens and would give me 600mm on both my D500 and D800? I could use it as my new walk around lens over my 18-300 which I could sell.

If you want the best of the big zooms, go with the Sigma Sport.
wolfman says Sigma and others say Tamron, either one I think you will be happy with and have more shackles left in your pockets.

I think the term is shekels, unless you're a prisoner, or into that sort of thing. LOL, I know off topic.

The bigger question is how much weight and size do you want to carry/manage ??
"Walk around" suggests you want the minimum or close to it.
The Tamron 18-400 has been a well received lens - for what it is. If you value IQ over convenience, look at the new Sigma 100-400 - it is the smallest/lightest full frame lens in that focal range and is the best value for the money.
The Sigma S is MUCH heavier than the rest and the Nikon 200-500 is somewhat heavier than the rest.
Unfortunately, using a DX lens on a full frame camera will only give you a center photo (only the central section of the full frame sensor gets used) and will cut down on how many pixels get used. Get yourself an FX lens.
I have the Sigma 150-600 and it works great, although obviously heavy enough so that "walk around" may be a problem for some folks. I also bought the Sigma 2X converter to go with it. The combo works pretty well, but I'm certainly no professional photographer and at my age, with my eyes, focus is always a challenge. I use a Nikon D3300 for some walk-around, and a D610 for times when I have a more stable platform and more cooperative subjects, e.g., landscapes. I've used both the lens and the lens + converter on both cameras. I know, there may be shrieks at my use of the word "converter" but there are times, even with backyard birds, that the extra length is fun.
He's talking about the 1.5 crop factor on the D 500.
Lots of good suggestions. Thank you all.

Tamron G2 150-600 and Sigma Sport 150-600 - pretty much equal. The Nikon 200-500 is close, but build quality, weather sealing, and performance is worse at 500mm than it is at 400mm.
https://photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-200-500mm-f5-6e-vrI was asking the same questions last year, so I borrowed/rented the same group of lenses and ended up with the Sigma Sport.
I have been using a 150 x 600 Sigma for about 6 months and love it. Is it as good as a 600 Nikon, no, but the price is much better. I have the contemporary model, not water proof, but one can find water proof sleeves which works if needed.

I would venture to say people coming from a 600mm f4, 200-400 f4, 500 f4, will enjoy the lighter weight of the Sigma S ! - Those coming from a 70-300 - NOT so much !
