I have parkinson's disease. As the illness progresses I need more and more help with the setup of the camera. In the end an assistant will setup the camera/tripod. Set iso, wb, shutter and aperture as per my instructions. Finally the assistant will frame the shot as per my instructions. I'll push the shutter release button to take the photo.
All post processing will be done as per my instructions.
At that point can I sign my name as being the photographer?
I refer to the works of Dale Chihuly a well-known glass blower. Unable to 'blow the glass' as a result of an accident, a team of assistants under his supervision do all the work creating the glass pieces And yet there is no doubt that the glass is a "Chihuly!'
What do you think! Am I the photographer?

You supplied the taking view, criteria, and methodology and thus you surely are the photographer; the artist if you will. If you had one or more assistants, that is what they are. YOU are the (head) photographer. They are assistants, you are "the man." Keep at it!

Absolutely! You envision the finished prodect, supply the tools, direct their use; you sign your name. Frank Lloyd Wright may have never picked up a hammer, but he built homes. You build images. Good for you!
In the film world, you would be the director and producer, but not the cinematographer.
I guess you become the owner/publisher, but not the photogrpaher.
Then again, there are plenty of filmmakers who never touch a camera... Michael Moore?
Good question. I don't have a definitive answer.

You are the creative person in control of all aspects and you pressed the shutter. Of course you are the photographer.

I'll second that. Definitely.
Is anyone less of a photographer because we use a computer for post processing ? The ability to turn knobs and push buttons does not a photographer make...

Of course you are! no doubt!
I assist a photographer who is legally blind in post processing his images. He directs my every move including the crop, tones, contrast, and more. He is the artist and his vision is the core of the image. I might see it differently but he owns it and it is rightly his name on the image. Not sure how he can be so precise but he is. I think he sees in his minds eye. I learn a great deal about seeing from this artist.
