I enjoy strumming along on a uke as well. Go the the uke group at the pub every Tues night. I am pretty bad on it but it is fun. Hoping to build a tenor from scratch over the next few months. Another MenzShed project

Nice job, Jerry. My next project is going to be a cigar box guitar, from a kit. I can assemble things, but that's where my skill level stops.

Interesting. That takes a lot of skill. Maybe you need to make it an "electric ukulele"!

Play that one with some other folks who play too, and you will surely "SMOKE" the competition!!

Playing the ukulele qualifies as "extreme fun." I keep hearing about the ukulele and laughing, and that's about the way it is. The Beatles, and George Harrison in particular, were big fans of the uke. Ironically, it was the popularity of the Beatles that moved the emphasis away from the uke and toward the guitar.

Look online for a local ukulele group and have some fun.

It's surprisingly easy to make it electric, and I considered that, but then I'd need an amp, and everyone would hear my every mistake.

A while back, I posted a couple of shots of the beginning of a cigar box ukulele. Some of you wanted to see the finished product. It looks nice, but it isn't very loud. I think it's because of a combination of too much internal bracing and the top. Unlike the other five sides, the tops isn't cedar but thick cardboard. It still has a nice sound, and I did it more for fun than to have another uke. For my next one, I'm going to make the box - all wood.

you are a talented guy...i love your cigar box ukelele! i had a ukulele when i was in college, and just loved it...a friend gave it to me.
then one day i bopped a guy with it ...i don't remember why, and my beautiful uke shattered...lol.

I built a tenor using a kit from Stewart MacDonald. "Kit" is a deceptive term since what you get is a box full of raw parts. There is a lot of precision work involved, but I'm glad I did it. Whoops! They cannot ship it out of the US, but there are other kits available. If you decide to build a uke, I would recommend getting the DVD from Stewart MacDonald. The builders of Mya Moe ukuleles give lots of tips and advice about how to do things. I used Timbermate and Tru-Oil for the finish.

Thanks. I'm sure you can find a seller of ukuleles online.

That is pretty neat, Jerry! I assume you can play the ukulele. I can't even play the stereo correctly.

"Play" is a relative term.
