headed to Lisbon and Porto - have checked and found the normal things to see, on the web; my lady friend and I usually like to stay a few days in places to, in particular,
walk around neighborhoods and taste and photograph local life; any suggestions for subjects off of the beaten path ?

Don't know either, but hope to soon, so look forward to hearing of your experiences. I can say that my daughter just returned from a trip to Portimao, some 3 hours south of Lisbon) and raved about the beaches, which are known for their rock formations - you walk down the street, pick a set of stairs, and then end up on a secluded beach - and the food - they went to the market every day and cooked fresh seafood for themselves.

I don't have any specific suggestions for subjects other than to keep your eyes open. I just got back from a road trip around northern Spain and came back with not only some interesting shots of daily life, but also two subjects I couldn't have imagined before I started: street art and doors (you can see a couple examples I posted in Photo Gallery section). In both cases, I just started noticing things and once I did, started shooting and then actively seeking; after a while, I had quite a collection.

So, maybe it's fresh food, markets, beaches, colors, stained glass windows, or ... One thing you could do pre-trip is search on Lisbon Images and get a sense of what others have captured - might help jump-start the process.

The Dauro Valley, wine region, is beautiful and is located about an hour and a half from Portro. Make sure to take a long walk along the Dauro river in Porto this is oldest part of Porto history. Visit the old train station in Porto which is a photographers paradise. Make sure that you photograph some of the Porto neighborhoods especial during the dream hours.

Lisbon is a large city and has many varied sites. Make sure that you visit the neighborhoods in the oldest part of Lisbon (very hilly) where each neighborhood has its own church. Finally, spend some time in the flat are of Lisbon along the river. I think that Lisbon is one of the most varied, both topographically as well as age, cities that I have visited in Europe. Many young people speak english and my our experience was that most people that we came in contact with were very nice and helpful.

If you have time visit the south of Portugal. The Algarve region is beautiful and is considerably different than the larger cities of Lisbon and Porto.

Sintra, Cascais and Evora. Especially Evora. Try to stay a night in Evora if possible.

Avoid the water The wine is simply awful and the local women do a fine line in bristly mustaches and some have hairy backs. But the scenery and architecture is stunning

The person that posted here asked specifically about a visit they were planning to Portugal I believe. Exactly what Mr dsturr's answer has to do with that is anyone's guess. I would offer an opinion myself that the Hog's very own mushroom photography specialist has never visited the country but felt the need for some obscure reason to open his mouth anyway?

I thought those were exactly the type of women a Frenchman returning to Europe woud be attracted to. Or at least you claimed to be one.

"Name is Willy Devaux and reasonably new to photography. Hoping to learn a lot here. Please point me at the best place here to learn. I am a French guy in my 50's who has lived in Canada for the past 20 years but now back in Europe. "

Let me use one of WR's favorite expressions: "What an idiot."

Sorry old boy I have to disappoint you with the artistic photography gig. Like you I just take snaps. I of course freely admit this whereas you I believe would like us to believe you have a degree of knowledge about the subject and qualify as a photographer. I will leave you to dwell on the delusions about your self and your posted snaps for others to judge.

Well you see, Billy, or Willy, or Wideopen, or Calibre or whatever you will be calling yourself today, you know nothing about me, and I could care less what you think of my abilities, whereas, I know a great deal about you. Tell me, what compels a grown man to try and "weasel" his way back into a forum he has been banned from, using a bunch of false identities, and rather poorly at that? Reminds me of your friend. Birds of a feather................

Can I recommend you go to a cab stand and get a driver that speaks good English. Tell him you want to hire him to show you the "off tourist route sites" that he thinks you should see. We have done this everywhere we have traveled, as well as on Cruise stops, and have never been disappointed in the results. Much better than buying a tour from a professional company and you control. He will stay as long as you want at any location to let you get the pics you want!

I wish you a GREAT trip!!

Admin bans folks from the site entirely who assume multiple identities does he not? So if your accusations were true surely we would not be able to have this nice little chat?
And so far you have said zilch about Portugal.
