"Compatible" typically means "fully compatible". In your case the SB-10 works just fine on the D5300, and will cause NO DAMAGE to your camera, even though it is seriously older than that body. It is just not "fully compatible" as it will have to be used fully manual, as will any other flash from that era. You will get no TTL metering on any Nikon flash older than the SB-400 model with your body.
