the auto focus on my 70-300 nikon has stopped auto focusing. should I send it back to B/h for repair? Or would a local business be sufficient?
Why not send it to Nikon? If you don't want to send it to Nikon, a local repair facility will probably do just as good a job as one in New York.
The only reason I can think of to send it to the other side of the country is if there's a warranty involved.
If you send it to Nikon, it will be repaired better than factory, more than likely. There is also warranty considerations if sent to Nikon.

Before you send it anywhere, decide what it's worth to fix. Or more exactly: what's your limit to pay to have it fixed. How old is the lens? Is it worth a typical minimum of $200 to fix? If the price was $300, is it still worth it to fix instead of shopping for a replacement?
If you begin the process at NikonUSA they will often give you an preliminary estimate without any commitment to send it in. That would be a good starting point.

First, B&H may be where you bought it but they do not repair. Second, double check that you didn't change the lens button to manual focus by mistake if it has one.

A $170 lens may cost almost as much to fix, not including shipping and parts. I would call them and ask them for a verbal quote. Sometimes they will provide a quote without needing to see the lens. If it is in warranty, then it's a no-brainer. Let them fix it.
If not in warranty but a used one or better yet get an upgrade.

I would check with Nikon Repair in Los Angeles, CA. Or go to an Authorized Nikon repair shop, locally. Give them a call first, and see what they have say. Good luck.
thank you all for your responses. I think I will go with Nikon. Thanks again

KEH, the used photo gear dudes in Atlanta have a repair station that works for fixed prices. I would check them out:
www.keh.com. They've done good work for me in the past.
If it is still under warranty send it back to Nikon. If the warranty expired sending the lens to the place where you bought it is a waste of time unless they have a repair shop.
I have used for my out of warranty repairs APS (Authorized Photo Service) out of Morton Groove, Ill. They only work with Nikon gear and they are a fully authorized Nikon repair facility.
You could also send the lens to Nikon but if it is a gray market Nikon will not repair it.
Send it to Nikon......they will give you a repair cost (if any) before they fix it and it will be like brand new and with a repair warranty.
Canon repaired an out of warranty lens of mine that stopped focusing and all I paid for was the shipping.
