This is sad Jerry. But a photographer or videographer should always copy valuable files immediately. I did a shoot yesterday
of a doctors demo of a new product and backed it up on a Mac Book Air as soon as I was finished. I learned at a very young age
that shooting has to be redundant and backed up. My best friend got married and I got a good photographer who did work for
my place and he bought a new flash which didn't synch. Of course today with digital we would know right away.

I think about that when we travel and lock gear in the car to have lunch. The camera and iPad with backup are together in the car. Maybe immediately uploading to the web, if available, is the safest bet. Of course, I'm not selling my pix so their loss would only annoy me.

The "distraction" on the subway could have been a knife fight.

I forgot to put film in a SLR camera one time at an important military event a long time ago. It was photos for me though. A Wedding photo loss. Wow! A $2000 reward that may never be collected too.

My father-in-law thought he was taking a lot of pictures of our wedding - like 40, on a roll of 36. Then he discovered that the film didn't catch on the take-up reel. We had lots of other pictures, though.

Or the "distraction" could have been the Ticket Inspector coming down the carriage..lol.

Unlikely. In NYC, you need a ticket to get on the train. I don't think they have ticket inspectors.

A long time ago, I had a friend took some wedding pictures and had his film destroyed by a lab. Why don't the couple just contact the photographer. I'm sure he still has the original images and he could reprint the pictures. It's possible that the maintenance crew just threw them out.

You would think that with today's technology and security, nobody could get in or out of a station without paying your fare..but for some reason on Main line routes on British Rail, you will get your ticket checked then clipped or signed. I dont know if they do this on city tubes or local routes though.

This is where the errors and omissions insurance comes in handy. I once heard of a similar case (lost wedding photos) and the photographer had to pay for everyone's travel expenses to come in and re-create the wedding to take the photos once more.

I can't understand why a photographer would destroy the images or negatives. I kept mine for many years. A reinactment just isn't the real thing.

Of course, you have to run your ticket through the turnstile to get to the trains, so that's one level of security. I was surprised to see people collecting tickets when we got off the trains and buses. On the NYC subway, once you pay to get on, you can go anywhere you want (unless that's changed).
