Excellent Cam.

I just brought a stem of milkweed with two caterpillars on it into my garage. Anything special I need to do?

Good Morning Bill - you need to find a container with ventilation and a screen if possible ; terrarium would be great ( we used a plastic juice cooler) Add Leaves from the milkweed for them to ascend and to eat ( and with they will get liquid)

Then just watch and wait. The caterpillar will eventually form a "J" then if you look above in some of my comments you will see it splitting its skin and transforming into its crystallis (Cocoon) It will then go from florescent green , to dark purple before becoming clear where you can see the butterflies wings folded inside. Usually it is the next morning to emerge a butterfly!

ps -flowers we added in the photo was after this butterfly emerged; prior to that was milk weed leaves and stems. Wait 24 hours before releasing - temps are supposed to be at least 60 degrees and not raining ; although a mist is fine !

Glass would be better for photo ops ..on our second we lifted the screen up on one side to get better photos - Best of Luck Heidi

Changing into it's chrysalis stage (Cocoon) was just as fascinating ( posted photos on comments above) and took maybe 15 minutes. I as well did not know his performance was 15 seconds; poss. less !

So we found some monarch caterpillars, took them into our makeshift aquarium and watched it change into its chrysalis. It went from light green, to dark purple then to a clear package in which you could see its wings.

My first time in doing this and so fascinating watching all the stages it goes through! In only 15 seconds ( we had two males) he emerged, dried and plumped up his wings. Twenty four hours and we set him free into the world !

Lucky to have witnessed , and to be able to photograph too!
