Hummm. I never thought of it as being inspirational to others. I wrote it more as a tribute to my wife who I feel saved my life. When my late was was undergoing chemo the doctors told me that the prognoses was bad for her. They did not share that with her nor did I, because we did not want to want to depress or her. When the doctors told me that I had a form of cancer that could be controlled, I did not believe them. They hid it from my late wife, so assumed they were hiding the bad news from me. I became depressed.

After my wife died and before I was told I had cancer, I was desperately trying to fill the void in my life that losing my first wife left. There were many women, some ridiculously young. I had become a "player." No one filled the empty feeling that I had. I drove back to my home town of Pittsburgh PA. and attended a High School reunion. That is were I re-met the little red head that I had ignored through HS. I fell for her like a ton of bricks. Things happened fast, as they tend to do for older people.

Later when I discovered I had cancer and thought I was dying, I phoned her and explained that I was not playing with her affection, my intentions were honorable but this cancer changes everything. The only thing that is important to me now is pain medications. She replied with the most classy thing I ever had a woman say to me: "Don't worry about me. You came along when I needed a man like you. I enjoyed you every bit as much as you enjoyed me. You just worry about getting better." We said our good byes and I hung up the phone. I stared at the phone wondering if I had made a mistake. I had, but she forgave me and came to my rescue.

I have made many mistakes in my life, she remains the smartest thing I ever did.

Facing ones own eminent demise, helps clear the thinking process immensely.

Dave, you have no idea how this story will affect others. I do not have the big bad "C" but RA and other medical issues that cause me daily pain which the meds only dull. That along with my ticker has taken a whole lot of wind out of my sails and if anything my wife (second like yourself) is in worse shape and pain. Whenever I meet someone like yourself it reminds me of how lucky I have been. My parents were told that I would be lucky to get to 30 years old. I am now 69 so I have like yourself and you wife proved them all wrong or at least we ourselves were wrong.

I thank you again for reminding me that there are a lot of individuals out there that struggle daily and it reminds me that this is life.

Take care Friend.

Greg

Great story! As they say on Antiques Roadshow, the provenance adds to the value of the piece.

The story needs another photo. The most beautiful girl in the world next to the luckiest man. I proposed to her that night. It was the next HS reunion, the 55th. I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me in front of our old HS class mates.

What a nice story! Paris is a wonderful city -and very romantic. I think one of the nicest memories my wife and I have was when we just picked up a bottle of wine, some cheese, fruit, and bread, and sat on the bank of the River Seine across from Notre Dame. So nice..

Over ten years ago I was undergoing chemotherapy. A little red headed girl I had known since grade school, knew that I was widowed, alone, and fighting cancer. She had just retired from teaching art in High School. She was also recently widowed, and drove hundreds of miles to be my care giver and help me survive. When I felt exhausted, she would show me a picture postcard of a mature couple kissing on the streets of Paris, saying "You will beat this cancer, recover, and we will travel to Paris." I did recover and I'm now in very good health. We took that trip to Paris and kissed at the same spot as the couple in the postcard. We like so many people, fell in love with Paris. We married and I bought a house deep in the woods in Pennsylvania. We have dedicated a little breakfast nook to our memory of Paris. We often sit across from each other, enjoy each other and our memories of that time. Our little Paris:

Thank you. I once had an oncologist say something to that made me feel better. He said, "I do not have diseases walk through my door. I have people with diseases walk through that door. What happens has a lot to do with who the people are. You are a fighter, you will be okay." I knew I was a fighter but how could he know?

I now wonder if that's his pat answer to everyone who asks the odds of survival. This was the same doctor who treated my late wife who did not make it. He no longer remembered her or me when I wept in his office, thanking him for the extra two years he managed to extend her life. I suppose oncologists must train themselves to forget. Rough job!

I ended up going to the same doctor that my wife went to, because the nurses told me he was the best. I was treated in the same hospital ward where I held my wife's hand and she underwent chemo after chemo. That was hard! To this day there is a lot I wish I could forget. Not my own cancer, I could handle that. Watching my wife suffer was much harder.

Dave, your "breakfast nook" is a Paris memento reminding you every time the most precious values of life you and your wife managed to built on in that French capital.
It would be hard to find something more powerful than that!
Your image - on the first sight looks modest, but it shows an incredibly well handled light and contrast control - while clearly demonstrating the symbol of life with the green background balancing out the red colors of the interior.
Well done, friend, I wish for both of you many more healthy years and happy shooting!
