Hi !
I have a Canon Rebel XTi and I shoot jpg/RAW. When I want to transfer those pictures on my computer, sometimes I have only jpg, sometimes I have both and I don't know how it happens. Last time I had two copies of the same picture (IMG_5828.jpg and IMG_5828 (9).jpg) and it was the same for all the pictures taken. No RAW anywhere. Do you know why ? How should I transfer from my camera to my new MAC ? I am starting a photoshop course and I really want to have my RAW pictures. Thanks a lot ! I know someone out there will have the right answer for me. I am learning a lot reading this forum every morning. Here is one of those pictures.
On July First at Harbourfront Center Toronto
Did you try to shoot only raw ?.It could be a bad memory card.

If I remember correctly In some shooting modes, auto, landscape, portrait. ( the automatic shooting modes) only shoot in jpeg. Only AV, TV, Manual, Program, Bulb can be shot in Raw and Raw/Jpeg. Read the manual it explains the different formats available for the shooting modes. Hope this helps.
I shoot only in raw. I see no reason to shoot both. Some do, some don't. But your question is the main reason I don't. First of all, I don't really want to see two of the same picture on my computer. And when I cull through all of my images of the day I most likely delete 75% of them for one reason or another and I wouldn't want to try and find the twin image in jpg for each of them.
You don't mention which editing program you use or your method of downloading. In LR there's a menu choice you need checked to view both or you will only see the raw or you'll see the raw and a label at the top that says raw + jpg or CR2 + jpg or something to that effect - which lets you know that the two are stacked but you can only see and work on one.
If I were going to a social event where I know that most if not all of the images were going to be emailed or posted on the web then I might use both - but only if I get a camera that takes two cards so that I can download them to seperate folders.

I am new at shooting Manual and just finished my first course to learn how to use it. I have Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS6. I don't know how to use them but I am in school to learn Photoshop. I will try to shoot just in RAW and see what happens. The pictures I am taking now is just to practice Manual, so it won't matter if I loose them. I need to learn before my next trip to India. Thanks to all for your answers !

For a personal opinion, get rid of the MAC and get yourself a decent PC.

Owww! You're certainly rowing upstream in a rapids by saying that!!! (although I'm a PCer myself).

Nobody has said it yet, but that's a very nice shot. Good compositional position and angle, and I really like the resulting manual exposure you achieved.

thank you so much ! I really appreciate it as it was my first real try in Manual. I was quite happy with the results, and all the other shots were also well exposed. I was so surprised because for the last 6 years (at least) I have been shooting Automatic, too afraid to try Manual, which is too bad because I missed some good opportunities to have great pictures. This year I was on a safari in Kenya and I missed all the early morning or late afternoon shots. But at least, now I know ! :)

I don't think so ! :D I just bought this new Apple and got rid of my old PC... I just need to learn to use it properly :)
Hi gravelc,
That's a beautiful shot of Harbourfront. I missed it on Canada Day but maybe the tallships will return later in the summer. Again, great shot.

I feel a Mac attack coming on.
Can I get that with fries and vanilla milkshake?
What program do you initially use to import images to computer? It's not the computer.
I see you have Lightroom and CS6. Do you have the proper plug-in?

I am such a novice, I don't know what a plug in is  I just used the cable from my camera to my PC (I am not sure yet how and where to transfer my pictures on my MAC - I am having my first One to One with a MAC professional next Tuesday). Then I transfer them on a USB and from that to MAC. Very complicated! When I will know how to use Lightroom, I will download them directly there.
