Wild Mustangs are plentiful in Arizona. When I lived in The Valley of the Sun I knew a woman that did animal rescue. There are roundups of these Mustangs that are auctioned off to the public. Most are purchased by dog food companies and promptly slaughtered, cooked and canned. She would buy one or two at a time for around $100 and take them home to be tended. These are the sturdiest horses that can be had on account of natural selection. So sturdy that their feet need not be shod to ride; front feet shod at the most. Unfortunately, feral and wild horses are considered expendable pests. To me though they remain a natural beauty of the southwest desert.
