All the camera stores around St. Louis seem to only be interested in Nikon and Cannon. When I was on the hunt for a Pentax K50 I had to go to Micro Center and ended up getting a great deal.

Some years back, living in a small town with no camera store, I traveled 300 miles to a nationally recognized camera store. I had several thousand to spend in redoing my camera outfit. A sales clerk finally came up to me, and as I was buying certain items while asking advise on certain other items, the store manager took him aside and told him that he was spending too much time with me. Now that really got to me and I almost walked pout the door without purchasing anything. But needing certain items on my list, I paid for those and left without completing my list. Since then I had never bought anything more from them.
Of course, now days there are several on-line stores that are very reputable, so I buy from them.

With all due respect, I will stick with my Nikon guy. Besides, whoever made it, it works great and in the end that is all that matters.

I went to one of the last retailers in Washington DC and had a wonderful experience. The sales folks were very helpful but not pushy. I had to return a used lens I bought expecting to get a lot of grief. Quite the opposite result!

Local retailers can't compete with online stores in terms of inventory but District Camera certainly excelled at service. I'll go back there when I need to actually speak with a real person.

B and H Photo. They have THE best sales people anywhere and vast inventory. Yes they're in NYC, but their phone reps are awesome and won't blow smoke . They also sell computers. I wanted a MacBook Pro right when Apple was changing models. I told the rep what I wanted to do and he said to get the older, cheaper, model.

I believe that B&H is the best. They've never disappointed me.

In Omaha Ne there is a camera store that has been in busines for a long time. It's about 50 miles from where I live. So One day I decided to make a drive to Omaha. I wanted a lot of small items. When I got to the store I was amazed. They had a mirrored wall, 20 feet long, stacked with Nikon lenses. Just like a bar displays spirits. A glass counter filled with cameras. All sizes makes and models. The floor had bags, tripods, and lots of other misculanus items. I was very impressed. A nice man came over and asked if he could help me. I fumbled around for my list and said ya. I told him I needed a Nikon lenses cap for a 18-55 lens, He said out of stock. Then I said any lens cap would be good. He said No none in stock. Then I asked for two lens hoods one for the kit 18-55 & 55-200. He looked on his computer and said out of stock. Then I asked for a plastic cover for my flash shoe. He looked and said No. Then I asked for a larger eye cup. Again None in stock. Then I asked for two rear bayonet caps. I got a yes. Then I asked for a SDHC holder or book. He then took me over to a rack and showed me what they had. They started at around thirty dollars and went up. I said No. Then I said if you have any of these items used that would be ok. Again I got no. So I went to pay for my two rear lens caps, feeling extremely disappointed.
Then he brings out a paper with phone book listings. Then another with candy ingredients said all the photos were taken with a Sony mirrorless camera. He pointed out how my Nikon D3300 could never produce that sharp of pictures. I was very impressed, if I was looking for phone book photos. Then he said they had Sony cameras on sale. I said that's great. He went on to say Nikon buys there sensors from Sony. I said WOW. Then he showed me a two thousand dollar Sony camera. I said I got one already, I got a Nikon with a Sony sensor.

The slow and agonizing death of camera stores is due both to poor sales and service as well as the pervasive influence of internet retailers.

I have bought from B&H and also spoke with staff. Very pleased! And much better than Adorama and KEH even though both are pretty good in their own right.

When folks cry about how we should patronize the local stores to keep them alive this is what I think about. It isn't just camera stores, it's lots of things. We aren't killing them, they are committing suicide.

I can't tell you how many times I've had very similar experiences. This is why 90% of my shopping is done online.

One fact everyone, so far, seems to be forgetting is there are camera stores as well as every other type of store that is NOT like the one described. I shop at Samy's Camera in Santa Barbara, CA. I seldom find anything I am looking for that is out of stock. I have purchased several cameras there and a few lenses and have never had any problem whatsoever. The sales people are extremely friendly and helpful. Of course they may be out of stock on something occasionally but are always ready to order it. My Leica M-10 took seemingly forever to come in but then again several big online stores did not have them either. I believe it was about six weeks to come in. I was in Idaho at the time so it was shipped to me, of course tax free as I was out of state.

Concerning the store in Omaha it is entirely possible that the very next customer could write a glowing report saying the store had everything he was looking for, even a Sony camera that he had been looking for. One experience doesn't make a good report. If the OP continues to go into that store and they seldom have what he is looking for then I might take his comments seriously.

This is not meant as a put down for the OP but only to suggest there might be another side of the story.

The fact that Nikon, up until the D850, uses Sony sensors is irrelevant, and represents a really bad sales technique.

is it really "sales technique" if he had virtually nothing in stock to sell? Bet the customer could order all that on Amazon without leaving his house.

Sad. And, really, that's why I order 90% of my gear online.
