Hope their all still there. The do gooders are removing all them that owned slaves. They think they can make history go away.

Drive through the Badlands, either on the way there or the way back. Also, a stop at the tourist trap, Wall Drug, is mandatory.

Sacajawea ?

Anyone who ever had an American History class in grade school would think so but they called the statue "Dignity" if I remember right.

Don't miss CUSTER STATE PARK, it should be a National Park. Buffalo herds, wild Donkeys and beautiful landscapes.

Badlands is interesting and if you find the burrowing owls, they are a photo opportunity. Lots of prairie dogs as well.

You will really enjoy the area, drive safe.

Someday, maybe, I'll look into the history of the statue. A statue of a native American woman at the Lewis and Clark rest stop and it does not honor Sacajawea ? Who would have guessed.

Not for everyone, but I found quite a few pictures waiting to be taken at Wall Drugs.

Sometimes honoring an anonymous member is the best way to honor the entire group {Unknown Soldier for example}

I get that, have no problem with it, but in this case I find it curious that at a stop that commemorates Lewis and Clark there is a statue of what is called a generic native American woman. Not honoring Sacajawea who to my mind was the epitome of all a person should be regardless of gender or ethnicity is a denial of what that person accomplished. A statue honoring all native American women is cool, but why not set it elsewhere? I feel that putting it with Lewis and Clark is tantamount to saying, "Sacajawea, who?"

The side view photo of George Washington on Mount Rushmore is from Highway 244 which runs from Mt. Rushmore to Hwy 385, not the Needles Highway. I grew up 12 miles from Mt. Rushmore at a ranch near Hill City and still own it, going there whenever I can. The donkeys are in Custer State Park on the wildlife loop and are always an attraction. The buffalo roundup is great to see, but you have to get there early to get a good vantage point. All of the places mentioned are worth a stop. The statue at Chamberlain is a tribute to all Native American women and is well worth a stop. The artist, last name, Lamphere, is well known for sculptures across South Dakota. There is one in Huron, South Dakota, called Spirit of Dakota that honors pioneer women. Every year a ceremony at the hotel where the statue is located honors SD women who have contributed to the South Dakota population/and or economy, either through volunteerism or through their jobs making it a better place to live.

WALL DRUG is nothing like it was 50+ years ago ...

My recollection is that it, alone, was Wall, SD ...

Basically, it was the Drug Store with a bustling cafeteria + the Buffalo (which is now stuffed) & some misc. tourist diversions surrounded by a gravel parking lot ... the "attractions" are now in the "Back Yard" section.

I sure don't recall the town, feed mill, and "mini-mall"/emporium which exists there now ...

Someone else may have a different memory of Wall Drug from the early 60s.

I lived in the Rapid City area for 17 years. My favorite places to visit were the Badlands (I went to an area called Sheep Mountain Table), Spearfish Canyon (especially Roughlock Falls), Keystone, Hill City, and Rockerville. I would also recommend Pactola Reservoir, a beautiful drive and lots of wildlife. The Needles highway is beautiful as well... The shot of George Washington is from the Needles Highway.

Some select photos from my time in the area.

FWIW. I think your "ghost cloud" pic from the Badlands is great!
