What do you think? ... Is Canon cheap for excluding lens hoods in their lens boxes?

The Canon website states no hood is included when purchasing this lens new at a cost of $599.99 ... Whether you bought it new from Canon or another source, the lens likely (I'll hedge) did not include the hood model EW-73D. The hood is "on sale" now at $32, marked down from $40 ... The lens's printed instructions (Owner's Manual) states same: Hood (sold separately) .

The point is that Canon does not provide hoods along with their lens when purchased new outside their L line. Faulty memories do not change this long standing / long lamented approach. Nor has the policy changed over time ... This review, created in 2012 when the lens was released, identifies the EW-73B petal hood as an optional accessory: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-S-18-135mm-f-3.5-5.6-IS-STM-Lens-Review.aspx

(What has changed is the hood's model number, listed as EW-73B in 2012 and supporting a number of lenses, most now discontinued as of 2017. For the now current lenses, the model is EW-73D ...)

I bought the lens at a local camera store and the lens hood that came with the lens is a EW-73B. It was included in the box, maybe the store did this, I don't know but I did get it with the purchase of that lens. I need to check because you mention EW-73D, maybe I have the wrong lens hood. Thanks I'll check it out.

When I purchased my Canon 7D MKII I also got the kit lens EF-S 18-135 IS, (which is a great lens IMO) and it came with the EW-73B lens hood. I don't however know if this is standard for the lens or something Profeel added as a bonus to my purchase.

SPeters ... was it the right hood for the lens, or no?

Since you mentioned it was a long time ago - quite possibly, then - it was BEFORE Canon adopted this policy ...

As far as I know its the right one, because it does what it suppose to do. I bought it about 10 years ago. I have never purchased a hood from Canon.

Well, that's good, then ... glad you got the right hood ...

Note: there is a digitized chart somewhere on the Net - listing all of Canon's lenses and the right hoods for each ....

If you care ...

But, seeing you lucked out ... good for you ...

B&H photo has a chart for the hoods for every Canon DSLR lens in their printed catalog.
It may be available online at their website somewhere too.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

If you don't like Canon's way of doing things, do not buy from them. You obviously do not know anything about being in business. A profit must be made, if not you are out of business. Instead of talking stupid, go take some pictures. No one needs to listen to this garbage. You do not impress anyone.

Another needless, unnecessary comment ... that makes 3 or 4 from you, CTHahn ...

Next one - you will be blocked ....

Nikon does seem to offer more hoods in the box than Canon but if you look at Nikon prices they are not free that hood is added to the price.
BTW what is the problem. If you want a hood order it with the lens if not then you don't have to get it.
You are given options and not forced to get extra you perhaps do not want.
But you should be old enough to figure out if you want a hood or not.

Yes but 25% of the time you do need them and if they are not there then that is just a bit of a problem.

I'm with you Robert. I have hood's on each and every lens I own, and the only time they come off is when I use a flash. They not only serve the purpose of unwanted light hitting the lens, but it protects the lens as well. Not to mention the fact they look pretty cool!
