While in the park there are tunnels through the mountain ( they all point to the face of Mt Rushmore ) and open range in areas for bison.... and left wingnuts from Chicago for
We took the 1 a.m. Badger from Manitowoc to Ludington in 2011. That's right, the overnight trip. I was exhausting because we chose not to sleep. But out in the middle of Lake Michigan in the dark of the wee hours, I swear, I could have reached up and grabbed noe of those stars. It was very chilly on deck, so a word to the wise....
We got to Manitowoc really enough to sightsee the town and found a great little bar with food but I can't remember the name of it.
I lived in the Rapid City area for 17 years. My favorite places to visit were the Badlands (I went to an area called Sheep Mountain Table), Spearfish Canyon (especially Roughlock Falls), Keystone, Hill City, and Rockerville. I would also recommend Pactola Reservoir, a beautiful drive and lots of wildlife. The Needles highway is beautiful as well... The shot of George Washington is from the Needles Highway.
Some select photos from my time in the area.

Get to Rushmore quick before the Antifa Taliban have it torn down, and replace it with Jesse Jackson Elijah Muhammed.
A early post mentioned that there are many forms of wildlife to be photographed. One mentioned was the bison, which makes me wonder; are there any buffalo left?
All the way through South Dakota along I90 are highway advertised spots to stop. Old towns, clip joints, museums, Corn Palace, Photo opps, and miles and miles of highway. If you can find a remaining small town restaurant the food will surprise you. Brookings SD has the Terry Redland art gallery. Black Hills will take a few days especially if you chose to stay at one of the motels in Dead Wood. Bad Lands is a photo day in itself, and make sure you bring a cooler with things to drink and your own snacks. The mammoth digs is Hot Springs is well worth your time. Just remember to keep your gas tank full and watch your check book so it doesn't get to low either.
The big horn sheep in the Badlands are beautiful this time of year. Was there in June and they were shedding then. Also the "Car Henge" in northwest Nebraska is interesting.
Bison is the correct name for what some people call "buffalo"
I think the Badlands is a must. Also, might want experience Wall Drugs. If herpetology is your thing, the Reptile Gardens has perhaps the largest collection of venomous snakes along with some beautiful floral & bird exhibits.
There are great places in the Black Hills. Mt Rushmore being the most obvious. But do not forget about Custer State Park, Needles Highway, Sylvan Lake, Deadwood, Lead and the various Caves etc. Endless opertunities to give your shutter a workout. Take the widest and the longest lens and you won't miss too many shots. Keep your finger on the trigger and have fun.

Really?
That big shaggy critter has been called a buffalo for over 400 years, then some in academia felt the need to tell all us old people that we were ignorant. Why haven't those same people corrected us and told us to use Taraxacum officinale when damning those yellow flowers that keep showing up in our lawns? I have made many stops along my way in life, one of those stops was 3 years on a buffalo ranch. What are now called bison, look, act and taste just like buffalo. So they are commonly called buffalo while their scientific name is bison, why do we have to change? I smell something "PC" is involved.
Oh well I guess that vaunted gentleman of the west (and show bus) should have his named changed to Bison William.
(Posted with my tongue in my check and a smile on my face)
Not far from Badlands is "prairie homestead" S. Dak. Interesting of itself but also the only place with white prairie dogs not albinos
Check out the colorful corn crib barn also.
Thank you! The sun is now shining in my world.
