An FX lens on a DX body will give you the maximum megapixels the camera is capable of shooting.

Really? And what would a DX lens on a DX body give you?

A 50mm lens on a D3400 "DX" body will give you an image the same as a a 75mm lens on a Full frame "FX" camera. So if you want a "normal" 50mm image on a DX you need to mount a 35mm lens.

But what happens if the 50mm lens is a DX lens?

If you are talking about "compression", you get the same effect, though your 50mm on a DX camera is closer to a 75mm on a full frame in terms of field of view. (You also have more depth of field at the same aperture with the DX)

Shooting the same scene from the same location with a 150mm lens on a full frame, 100mm on a DX camera or 75mm on a micro 4/3 (aspect ratio aside) will all give you the same "flattening" because you are not changing the location or perspective.
Another way to see this is to shoot a scene from the same location, change only the focal length and crop the widest angle shot to match the image size of the one done with the longer lens. You get the same "compression" with any shot in that group. Perspective changes when you move the camera. The relative size of objects in the scene change when you do that.
If you are talking about "compression", ... (show quote)

But at the same distance and aperture, the 50mm lens on a DX will have LESS depth of field than on an FX camera.

Funny 3 pages of replies and no one answered his question until a page and a half in. Also no one suggested he consult the camera User's Manuel. My Nikon FX camera User's Manual fully explains the DX function with helpful easy to understand illustrations.

Actually, dngallagher answered his question and even supplied a graph to illustrate it. But to his one correct answer there are a ton of answers from people that couldn't find their back end with a GPS unit. If you don't know what your talking about, leave it alone and don't deceive or confuse those trying to learn. There is just too much of this on this thread. All you do is discredit the whole site.

More like WHICH was the question.

Not what I was referring to.

Of course, if you change the position to make the same composition, you obviously change depth of field, and in this case for the same composition, the crop camera will have more depth of field.

This thread proves how many out there have no idea what they are talking about.

It also illustrates that some respondents offer even less, and only post criticisms of others while contributing NOTHING to the discussion. And even others become playful and ask rhetorical questions when they encounter posts that make no sense at all, or have blatant errors. Go figure . . .

For example? Is there a 50mm DX?

From the original post on page 1:

"If shooting an FX lens on DX body, does it effect the actual number of mega pixels the is recorded on the photo?"

Nope. Did not answer the question. He provided the information one could use to answer the question.

Sorry, not going to respond to the rest of your troll-bait.

Trolls like you who partake of name calling and insults are what make it so unattractive these days.

Original question by kfoo: "If shooting an FX lens on DX body, does it effect the actual number of mega pixels the is recorded on the photo?"

Answer by Dngallagher: "The number of megapixels is not effected by the lens, that is a function of the camera sensor."

I guess Dngallagher did answer the original question.

There are certainly many DX / APS-C zoom lenses which have 50mm within their range.
