All the info here is good stuff. If the student is trust worthy, go a little above what you really can afford. It will pay in the long run!

So many great opinions here and so many interesting perspectives on my question.
I found him a refurbished Rebel T6s with an 18-135 lens on the Canon site. This will be in addition to the lenses he already has (18-55; 70-300). I think this will serve him well until he is ready to move to another system which he will buy himself.

Within the Canon line up, (I am a Canon user) I think that is an excellent choice. I started digital SLRs with a T3i, now have an 80D. I have the first gen 70-300 IS which although aging is a good lens, also have the 18-135 (STM) which is my default walk around lens. From the lens perspective, since I like wide angle stuff, I would also consider the EF-S 10-18 as an additional option. Those three lenses would cover a very broad range of capabilities from a learning potential aspect.

The canon T6s is a very smart choice (I have the T6i). I also have the Canon 10-18 MM W.A. the Sigma 28-250 as my walk around lens and the
Tamron 60 MM f:2 macro for portraits. Great glass all.

I suspect you have the Sigma 18-250 lens, I am not aware of a 28-250.

I purchased that lens years ago and was very happy with it until, for some reason, it won't work on my 80D after a year of good service. It still works on my T2i. The IQ was more than adequate for my purposes.

The 10-18 is a great (and inexpensive) addition to any Canon APS-C kit.
