Idaho, Wa. Or. Trip, wild fire question
My wife and I plan to leave Mi. Tues morning for a trip to Pacific Northwest.
Mt Ranier, Mt hood, Colombia gorge, falls etc on the wish list. Watching the news we are wondring how big an issue smoke will be on visibility and photo opps.
One alternative is going to Reno/Tahoe then to coast and head north to Or. and Wa.
Another option is No. Cal and Yosemite, and other N.P.s.
I wondered if any UHH folks in the area could offer some insight. Is the smoke everpresent or does it ebb and flow, any areas worthless right now or any areas a-ok?
Thanks in advance!
A new fire just broke out in the Gorge near Cascade Locks which is adding to the smoke problem here.
No matter what the answer is at present, the weather is a constantly vacillating situation. No one can predict what the weather will be days from now.

Take your kit lenses ... the smoke won't matter.
The wildfire situation is unlikely to go away as it is so dry here. Several days ago I looked out the sixth floor toward a very red sun. With my eclipse glasses on, I could see nothing. That should tell you all you need to know. Also you should realize that the haze makes driving very unpleasant. Slow moving traffic. I've had to make several trips to Seattle lately, and it increases the travel time significantly to have hazy, smoky skies. My recommendation is to delay your trip until later in the year: Late October to November....
The only problem with delaying until October/November is the smoke/haze will be replaced with clouds and rain.

I'd rather breathe clean air.
Agree but the photo opportunities are much better in the non-rainy season.
Thanks everyone.
I think a reschedule is out of the question so current plan is Reno then Pacific coast and flexibility. .

Usually the ocean breezes will keep, the air more palatable. Enjoy your trip
there is a huge fire in SW Oregon it all depends on which way the wind is blowing. The smoke is revealing lots of epic sunsets and sunrises

If you have breathing problems, give that some consideration. Smoke travels for miles, and smoke is actually very fine particles.
As for photography, you can get pictures of what a forest fire area looks like - lots of smoke. Also, you could have beautiful sunrises and sunsets.
It's too late to see Rainer. It usually disappears in late August๐๐๐
Smoke is always possible but less likely in the Northwest areas of Oregon, Washington
See Mt St Helens. Spectacular and it's below the clouds! (Now...)
Mt Hood should be fine
Have fun!
The smoke ebbs and flows and in the last few days has been most prominent on the horizon. Depends on the wind. Avoid sweeping panoramic views with lots of sky. Avoid taking pictures mid day. We were at Mt Rainier a couple of weeks ago. The day we got there we couldn't even see the mountain (and it's huge) but within a couple of days it cleared in some directions - enough to get nice images. And the wildflowers were fantastic. Just pick your subjects carefully- local instead of global shots.
Since you're going up the coast, make sure and stop at Cape Perpetua south of Newport, Oregon. Lots of accessible tidal pools and waves crashing on shore. Our favorite spot to go. We usually stay in Newport or Yachats while we're there.
