A Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina in Canadian RCAF markings - so cool to see one flying! The Canadians call it the "Canso". This one is based in Victoria, B.C.

One of my instructors at the Naval Academy was a Catalina pilot . He said it was a reliable bird and a joy to fly . In WW2 he flew one in the Pacific . After the war he switched to LTA ASW , and retired from the USN in 1962 when the USN retired all of her LTA squadrons . Before the war he flew a F3B . The Catalina was his favorite though !
Nice photographs .

Not sure those are Canadian markings. They look more like they're British. Canadian birds normally have a maple leaf inside a red circle. Being a WWII bird, they may have used British markings.

Nick, everything I've found on the history of this plane says it served only with the RCAF. I believe it's painted in WWII-era colors and markings, as you surmised.

Very nice shots. You have a good BIF technique going. Not being an RCAF history buff, I can believe it. I was stationed at Langley AFB, VA 1983-1985. They started a history display with an F-86, F-105, & F-15. All 3 birds were painted in Ghost Gray colors which the Saber Jet & Thunderchief never carried while in service. Several folks got together & wrote a letter to the base commander & the Tactical Air Command Historian. It took about a year but, the planes were eventually repainted in more appropriate paint schemes.

Very nice images of a classic aircraft. Even when I was in grammar school this plane was flying (I was a precocious little s***). As an avid fan of military aircraft even back in that day so long ago I recall reading that pilots loved to fly the Catalina "flying boat".
