Hello to everyone
I have been following some of the hedgehog topics without making myself known. I am a novice in many aspects, and i have not felt comfortable bringing up a topic. I have an Olympus OM-D given to my by my husband. But it has never been mentioned by any of you. I read that many of you favor Nikons. Any reason?

Greetings. Lia

Many of us are long time Nikon users. I've been using a Nikon camera of one sort or another since 1966. Like myself I like them because I'm still using lenses that were made for my old film cameras on modern DSLR's. Many of them are manual but they still work very well and are great for some very specific work. Canon camera's are also good camera's and under different circumstances I would have been using them. Either way you go you'll be in good hands. The Olympus you have is an exceptional camera and I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if I didn't have so much invested with my Nikon equipment.

Welcome to the forum. The majority of members shoot Canon or Nikon because for one, Canon and Nikon are the two leading camera manufacturers and have been for a long time. Another reason is brand loyalty and a big reason is lenses. Many members, like myself, shoot both Canon and Nikon. Other popular makes are Sony and Pentax and Olympus. Your Olympus is an excellent camera.

I started out all Cannon in the early 70s. I used them for years upgrading as I could afford. As life got busy and priorities changes (kids and a career), I sort of fell away from photography. In the meantime digital came on the scene. My niece bought her first digital SLR, a Nikon D40. We were together in Wyoming on summer vacation where we grew up. I loved the pictures she gave me on a thumb drive at the end and told my wife I wanted to get back into photography with a digital SLR. For Christmas she surprised me with a D40. I loved it and have upgraded a couple times since and now I'm shooting a D7100. I have now purchased a number of lenses and am now 1005 a "Nikon Guy."

Because they are the best? No, seriously, for every user there is a varied and different reason. The camera you currently have is no slouch, it is all about the person behind the camera. I started out with Canon film range finder and held a professional Nikon SLR years ago. Never forgot that feeling. When, after my kids grew up and I had the spare time (retired) I took the hobby back up and went with a Nikon D3300. Now shooting with a D7000 going to either a D500 or 7200 as my final upgrade. Enjoy the "ride" and read the forum, and have fun.

Welcome to the herd! You will find the vast majority of hogs full of wisdom and sound advice. Some are just rude and insulting but there's always room for them in the "ignore list", lol. Good shooting to you.

What a welcome! Thanks to all. I hope I can learn from all of you. It is encouraging to read (hear) you say...go ahead and shoot. I will now go ahead and take my camera out into the wild and forget that you guys love the Cannon! See you out there...Lia

You will like it on this forum, there are lots of very knowledgeable on here, just ask anything you want to know and you will receive an answer almost immediately.
As far as your OMD camera is concerned there are many Olympus users on here, I am one of them. There are a lot of Canon and Nilkon owners so this forum tends to be dominated by these makes.

Yes as Jerry say, welcome. Jerry is the Librarian and has 100 thousand and one articles in his reference pack!! Me, an old scientific grump. UHH is a haven for money spending addicts they have closets filled with expensive equipment knowing that what you get is what you pay for .... even the same item for twice the money is bound to be better... say what??

I am not familiar with that camera, but "Our end-of-year poll suggested a fair proportion of our readers agreed, with it claiming the title: 'Readers' Camera of the Year.'" Read a full review:
https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/olympus-om-d-e-m1

At first use the camera's automatic.... composition is the key to successful photography. Take more area than what you need then use the most important Post tool the Crop... crop to 8x10 since that is the proportion for the great photos you will mount and cover your wall with!!

Composition is based on Psychology and Art... the two are combined in a large on going work that is FREE.... learn what you need as you need it and learn what you needed when you made a mistake. Biggest mistake people make is taking one shot from one angle..... move left right up down ... SD cards do not wear-out easily.... Take JPEG and RAW... Ignore the RAW for a few years... useful to go back and tweak a master peace later. JPEG is fine and can be polished in Post Processing.
http://truecenterpublishing.com/photopsy/article_index.htm

Use the same Edit program as your husband... you will need a guiding hand at first....BUT KIS keep it simple....

Neat trick... flowers... set the camera to 1/128 seconds [fastest that DSLR will sinc for] f=8 low ISO [sensitivity] and use the flash. This darkens the junk in the background and focuses on the flower.

For editing ... give a download for the new FREE Topaz Labs Studio 2.... and perhaps buy the Clarity Pack on sale for $40 it will do a wide range of adjustments easily contrast, color etc.... Also most modern and a Adobe Photoshop Killer is called Affinity... it is a one time cost of $50 vs the $10/month/forever Payment to the old clunker Photoshop. People will tell you Lightroom... No! Hard to use and it is a cult item. What? You don't use Lightroom or Crisco for frying!!! Bull!!

I use Nikon because I own the system, I still have many SB-800 flashes that work on their latest models. I own many lenses, some AI lenses that still function on the latest Nikon models. If I switched I would need to replace a lot, their fore I stay with this brand. I have heard great things about your camera and if it delivers for you, what else do you need?

I bought a Canon Rebel way back then would buy another Rebel every once in a while when a new one popped up. Last year a guy I work with showed me his 5D and I just had to have a full frame camera but couldn’t afford the 5D series as it’s just a hobby. I was able to get the 6D and love it, I now only own two lens but I’m very happy with the two I have. The 24-105L is a great walk around lens and the one I got a few weeks ago is just a beast of a lens, the 70-200 f/2.8 L is usm ii. I know a pro can do with a first gen Rebel what I can do with my setup but after having kit lens all my life my pics got better overnight with the two lens I have now.
