I was in the market for a Canon 7D. But on a fixed income, I didn't want to spend the $1600.00. I waited until the 7D Mark II came out and was able to get a new 7D left over from B&H for $750.00. Sometimes pays off not to have to have the latest greatest. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Don't expect a huge drop — it's still a great camera.

Thanks David! If nor a huge drop, might as well go with the D850.

Bah drink less coffee, beers and if you smoke quit. THEN the 810 is really affordable.

Now there's a statement with wisdom. Seriously. I was at a store the other day and, (I don't smoke, by the way) saw that a pack of Marlboro cigarettes was over $10.00!!! How can anyone afford to smoke? But to add to the list of money saving attempts, go out to eat less often, and when you do, share a meal with your SO. The expensive camera becomes more and more affordable.

Getting up in the morning is the only justification I need for whatever I do the rest of the day. And, I certainly wouldn't expect a bunch of strangers to question it. Just sayin'.

Why do people care about how other people spend their money?

An excellent question

I think you meant "...THEN the ** 850 ** is really affordable." ? :)

I've wondered about this as well. It's not as if it is coming out of their pocket, so why comment on how a person spends his/her money? Could it be envy?

Go ahead and place your order, as production units will not ship for months. There are a lot of Photographers in the queue ahead of you already.

Was in a local Nikon dealer a few minutes ago and was told all (100%) of the first batch of 850s was sold already, and if I really wanted one I should put a deposit down on the next shipment and they'd see what they could do. (I'm perfectly happy with my D600 and am learning mirrorless with a Lumix GX85, so I just bought a little bag for my wife's new P&S.)

You missed the bulk of the statement. The cost was a closing statement not condoning or condemning. If you feel the cost of goods makes you a better photographer then by all means ...spend away.

So, when would be the best time to buy a Nikon D810 when the D850 is being released in a few day's? All things equal, I would prefer the D850, but value is very important being retired.

If you are not in a hurry, Nikon periodically has very good sales. And if you shop around, some vendors add bonus items as a way of giving a discount. [Nikon dictates the prices, so vendors have to abide by them.] I bought my D810 last fall from B&H around the holidays, the bonus item was a 4TB WD My Book and a 32GB SD card, retail value total over $100. Another possibility is to purchase refurbished or pre-owned: Cameta gives the best warranty - 1 year - others [including Nikon] give 90 days warranty.

Not all cameras are equal, do you realize that? Sometimes you have to spend more money for quality goods that can give the output one seeks. If everyone was interested in mediocre, then a cell phone is all one needs for their purposes.

What have you be using?? Has your life been in the doldrums because you do not have a D810?? How will your life be improved by having a D810? Can you amortize the cost as a business expense? What is your audience? If you take bad pictures with your current camera will this addition inspire to take better pictures?
Some of the pictures taken with cell phones would indicate for the average Joe or Jane you really don't need to spend that kind of money to take some very nice pictures.

"I was spending my time in the doldrums. I was caught in a caudron of hate."
Then I bought an 850!
