I'd stay with Canon. Thinking you have some canon lenses. check out the canon T6i. Full featured, and a very nice step-up.
Has live view and 23.2 MP's.

Canon's 18-55 is not a bad lens, depending on what your shooting, as far as moving to a full frame do you NEED it? Moving to Nikon, I suggest you rent one for a few days and see if the handling appeals to you, my personal preference is Canon, if not a Canon I'd probably go Pentax , I just do not like the feel of Nikons, and yes I have used Nikons, Bob.

Whatever you buy will start you down a long and pricey trail. Don't stop at considering Canon and Nikon. At least consider Fuji, Sony and Pentax. Over many years I have used all of the above (And grown up cameras like Linhof and Toyo, as well). I am convinced that the MILC has many advantages; especially Sony and Fuji.

About a year ago I decided I needed to upgrade from my T2i. I had 2 main reasons I was dissatisfied with it.
1) Inability to focus in very low light
2) Not having an articulated LCD screen.
Not wanting the weight and size of a full frame camera, I considered the 7DII and the 80D. For my purposes the 80D won out and I couldn't be happier. Having the touch screen wasn't a motive but has turned out to be VERY convenient.

You should google a comparison of the different models you are considering, and ADD the expense of changing brands if you leave Canon. The lenses you have are not garbage.

Did your "friend" offer any objective proof that your 18-55 is "garbage"? If not, why assume that he/she is an expert. Just remember, "X" is an unknown factor and a "Spurt" is a drip under pressure.

Based upon your needs and 3 years commitment please consider Sony A7r ii as well. You are not going to be disappointed at all. Also you can use your Canon lenses on Sony with metabone adopter. Who knows Nikon go out of business soon or in next couple of years but Sony going to stay many many years and Sony may end up partnering or buying Nikon camera division. Not to mention Sony A7r ii is mirror less and very handy and easy compare to Nikon bulky body and heavy lenses.

What is with all the doom and gloom over Nikon? They will not be going out of business anytime soon. They are a fairly diversified company.

Even though I own mostly Canon gear, it would be the 750 for me. Perfect camera for sports / action.

Look into the Canon 6DII, unless your friend is sharing lenses with you, then you may as well look for a D810.

You desperately NEED !!!! A new mentor.

Your friend ?¿? sounds more like an ex-spurt, as in "has been drip under pressure."

This is me too. I would be changing over to Nikon. I wish I would have switched when I upgraded from my T3. Now I am firmly Canon. Although, I really do love my 5DIV!

Nikon continues to hold strong in the DSLR camera market with 39.1% market share (compared to Canon's 54.7% share). Nikon has benefited greatly by using well-regarded Sony sensors in its cameras.
Sony sensor technology is so great that company like Nikon who capture 39.1% of the DSLR market depends upon Sony sensors. I am not sure if Nikon heading towards bankruptcy but looking at the current decline in sales and loss of profits every year and limiting budget for R & D let's see how long they may sustain. I suggested Sony because if Nikon is depending on Sony sensor technology then why not just buy the Sony.
Nikon benefits from Sony's R&D by implementing their sensors in Nikon cameras. However, Nikon has done very little in terms of inventing new features on the cameras themselves. They have been slow to implement connectivity features as well as making any effort to reduce the size and weight of their gear. Sony is dumping billions of dollars into research and development of image sensors, which seems to be paying dividends. That also translates into camera sales, because they often prevent other companies from using their imaging sensors until Sony has used the sensor for 6 months in their own cameras. Your choice of camera is obviously a personal decision. But I hope that this background information can help you to make a more informed decision with your dollars.

Because Nikon's optics are head and shoulders above Sony's.
