I posted that I have had this great camera for a few months. A few weeks ago I shot
at a hotel restuarant that had a surfing ride below where we were. I hand held and didn't
live my seat. When zooming in on shot on computer I could see the drops of water on the
surfer demos back. We all know zooms aren't the sharp at different ranges.
What has amazed me is how good these shots when zoomed out.
Not sure how Sony partnered with Zeiss design make this happen.
Or if is software magic. These were a screen grabs.

Nice - both of you. Cropping is a great feature that should not be ignored. I crop every shot I take.

Jerry for some reason this camera does very well in being
sharp in it's reach. Ken Rockwell really got me started with his
rave review. Well worth reading online. People complained about
the original pricing $1500. Now less. You are getting a 24 600mm
2.4 zeiss designed lens. The shots are so clean and sharp I
suspect it is software design. What I do miss is the
great bokeh. But not that bad at right range aperture. I
t's performanceat long zooms hand held is amazing.
Hope things are well.

Have you seen images from the same size sensor cameras - about half the price or even less than that?
I mean Panasonic, Canon, Nikon and Fuji.
I think you will be surprised, too.

What are the competing cameras? I've been told the Panasonic is not as good as the Sony.

Almost, but not quite. The RX10iii's lens is better than the Panasonic's, and has longer range, 600mm vs. 450mm.

Is RX10iii lens better than lenses from Panasonic, Nikon or Canon? I doubt. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway.
Panasonic has a Leitz designed zoom to 720mm and Nikon, Sony or Canon have a zoom range even longer.
But it is not the range of the zoom only. These cameras are highly competitive but may be designed for slightly different kind of use.
If you want to take pictures of a variety of subjects, you may need more than one camera? I take always the camera which is the most convenient for the expected shoot.
Also, pick up the tool for you to use in the most adverse conditions, giving you the most satisfying images.
In the store, hold each camera in your hands first, compare, make a few clicks - and decide after.
Good Luck!

Addressing the lens on this camera better then others no. The RX10 II is a bridge camera.
It is a compromise for $1400. It does everything well. The 4k video and Sony hybrid HD
and the stills are very good. It is camera that gets better and better as you get used to it.
it is a street camera. If I was shooting landscapes and nature this would not be my choice.
The reach of the lens an its pretty good performance is great to have. Ken Rockwell said
he picked up this camera and couldn't put it down. He was right.
