Do you have personal experience with them refusing to work on a lens or camera that they have updated to Mark 11? My 24-70mm Mark 11 by Canon is a newer lens and they worked on my lens, a non-warranty covered problem, free of charge and returned it to me in due course. I connected with them two weeks ago about my original problem, decreased focus capabilities at 100 mm, and they sent me the shipping documents. It seems to me that they planned to take a look at my lens ... I chose to delay sending it in because I needed it and the lens problems are becoming worse. Please let us all know if a mfg is refusing to work on one of its best lenses.

I can't speak specifically to the 100-400 mkl.
When Canon runs out of one part, any part, they term a lens, camera, printer etc to be OUT OF SERVICE LIFE(oosl) and will no longer work on them. They might do an exterior clean, but WILL NOT go inside it. The problem becomes if they break/ruin something in/on the lens/camera, they no longer have the ability to fix it and would be responsible for replacing it with new product you may not want, thus you'll be very unhappy.
I've never sent them oosl equipment because they've told me on the phone NOT to.
Have you sent in oosl equipment that required disassembly and they repaired it internally??

Update:
I just called CPS and the good news is that the 100-400 mkl is STILL IN service life, so any repair can still be performed.
But they DID reassure that once oosl, Canon will ONLY do maintance which is limited to "clean and lube", but NO repairs! That's both for lenses and cameras.

Thanks, I thought so since they sent me the shipping labels ...

My take on your main mistake was in not sending it as soon as you got the shipping materials. Now with only a short time before your trip you might not get it back in time unless you want to pay the rather higher overnight shipping charges.

Thankfully I don't have to worry about that kind of problem, I live 21 miles from one of their main service centers and can drive there in aprx 1/2 hour to drop off and pick up.

Thank you for replying ... I don't consider making a strategic decision based on need for the equipment a mistake. Some of these connection errors are simply dirty connections or firmware issues. It is always best to attempt the simplest course of action first and then look to sending the equipment in to the manufacturer.

PMW603 You mention a trip to Banff. Is that Banff in Scotland? Are you in Scotland?
I recommend Johnsons in Glasgow for lens repairs/servicing.

Hi everyone, I have had the Canon 100-400 for 2-3 years and I have been very challenged with the connection to my Canon 7D Mark 11. The connection will frequently fail when I pull up the camera to photo BIF, stills on monopod, good weather and bad weather. I have cloth-cleaned the connections on the lens and on the camera and air cleaned them after. It doesn't happen with my 24-70mm Canon L lens. The only way to get the camera to work again is to turn it off and back on and start over with my focus, etc. Anyone else have these issues with this lens? If so, how did you fix it, please?

I had the same problem with a Sigma 80-400 when I used it for BIF and wildlife. This only happened on my 7dii not on my T1i.
I now have the same Canon 100-400 L lens as you, with no problems so far.
I am interested to hear what the outcome is for you.

The mechanical connection of the lens seems dimensionally out of tolerance. The bayonet mount can be replaced with a dimensionally correct one and should fix the problem .......

You send it in to Canon for repair. It sounds like more than just dirty contacts. There are electrical components inside the lens that may have corroded or may need repair or replacing. Let the experts determine what is wrong. Or, buy the new Mark II and get a better IQ all the way around.

I used a 100-400L mk I on my 7DII with no problems. It also works fine with my new 100-400L mk II. The only lens I had problems with on the 7DII was my Tamron 150-600 (first model). It had trouble with AF, Tamron and Canon both came up with solutions in the form of new firmware. I sent my lens off to Tamron and they updated the firmware as well as tuning it for the 7DII (it already worked great with my 6D) and I installed the new Canon firmware myself, no problems after that.

However as to cleaning the contacts, if they are covered with grime or such just rubbing them might not get it off. There is the old pencil eraser trick, but that might damage the contacts if you use too much pressure and then you have to clean off the eraser particles. I use electronic contact cleaner with a Q-Tip. Dab a damp Q-Tip on the contacts, let stand a bit then rub with a clean microfiber cloth and blow off with air.

Robert,

I am not familiar with a "electronic contact cleaner". Could you suggest one?

Thank you

The 7DII had one firmware update specifically for AF issues. Have you confirmed you have the most current updates applied to the camera? If yes, you should consult Canon as there should be now issues in using these two models together.

What is the most current upgrade for the Canon 7DMKII?

It is a solvent designed to clean contacts on electronic/electrical devices, most major electronic outlets will have it or go on Amazon. Home Depot, Lowes and other hardware or auto store type business will have it also. It comes in both spray cans and bottles. Two of the main features are non-conductive and that it won't dissolve the plastic parts. It also evaporates very rapidly so you don't have to wait for things to dry.
