Pro writer, amateur shooter. Love Canon, so my little SX700 HS is sufficient for all needs. Going to Iceland in ten days, might like to upgrade for better trip pix. Canon, moderate price, refurbished is fine, not many bells-whistles, easy to use. Wish I could give more details, but will wait for you experts.

If your current camera is "sufficient for all needs" a more expensive camera will not get you better trip pictures. Just take the best pictures you can with your current gear.

Just returned from there three weeks ago. I took the Sony RX10 11 and it did the job. Too windy to change lenses...the 24mm was enough for most wide angle shots ( lots of waterfalls and glaciers) and the 600mm zoom for shots of horses, sheep and puffins was excellent. I'm assuming your Canon has this same capacity, so go with that because unless you are going on an actual photography tour or you are on your own, you won't have time to do a lot of setting up. I got some great shots and the country as a whole is absolutely beautiful. It's very pricey, so be prepared for $5 cans of coke. Enjoy and have fun.

Thanks to you both. "Sufficient for my needs" means musicians in concert halls, lots of other travel pieces, the latter for my own personal use. Just thought there might be a Canon with a 28-??? lens which might be available for those lava flows and waterfalls etc.

Your current camera has a 25-750mm equivalent zoom lens. Is there some reason why it can't be used for lava flows and waterfalls? If you want the waterfalls to have that creamy look, just use a slow shutter.

You are correct. I should be happy with what I have, and concentrate on Icelandic vodka and personal picture pleasures

Try some comparisons.

Read comparisons and specs, and decide what features are important to you.

As one who has visited Iceland several times and am always ready to go again, I say that Iceland cannot be seen and really enjoyed unless hiking/camping and many of the best places simply are not accessible by other than on foot.

And that makes for lightest, most convenient camera that can do the job and the SX700 is great except -- NO VIEWFINDER -- and the suggestion that the SONY RX-10 be used is a good one which, while a bit bulky, has the necessary viewfinder, has lots of Zoom and a slightly larger sensor for slightly better solution than the SX70.

I also suggest a waterproof camera for those lovely thermal pools (not the Blue Lagoon as too many tourists PEE in there).

Accompanying photo taken with a Panasonic ZS20 and I believe it conveys the beauty and the vastness of Iceland that I took in 2013 and had a Panasonic FZ150 akso on that trip. Still have and use the ZS20 but now have the Sony RX10 mentioned by another reply.

Was in Iceland for 10 days in July.
My Canon SX50 was all I needed.
Be sure to bring lots of money or a credit card that allows you to spend lots of money. Prices are higher than New York City.
Lots to see and plenty of photo ops.
ENJOY!!

I think what it is really dependent on is how happy you are with your current output from your camera. I like a picture that I can view at 100% and still have a crisp, clear photo. Personally, I feel that that is hard to do on a p&s. But if you are happy with your current output, then you will be happy with it in Iceland. Enjoy your trip!

Myself, I have little problem with crispness of P&S, even Mobilephone compared to a dSLR at 100% but its at 1000% that the differences show-up. These days they all have the same number of pixels (20,000,000 or so) but the size of the pixels as well as the quality of the optics determines the number of RESOLs in the images taken and, thusly, the crispness in a much-blown-up image of, say, a small bird far-away that's a fraction of the total scene. I compared an Osprey quite far away in photos taken at same time with my Sony RX10 at 600mm (35mm equivalent) and my Nikon 3300 at 300mm (35mm equivalent) with both expended to the same size -- and the osprey was slightly crisper in the D3300 images.

The worst thing you can do is change cameras just prior to a trip. Take what you know and enjoy.

See, that is why it depends on one's standards. I would have a problem with a point and shoot. I am not saying you can not get a good picture with one, but I would want superior pictures from such a trip.

Thanks to all. I am indeed pretty happy with what I have, but was considering a small change. Since my girlfriend also has a quite good camera, and since we're going for the experience and joy (with enough pictures for reminiscences) and since I have a few minor stories in minor Asian journals lined up (to partly pay for the expensive cost of living), I'll probably stick with what I have. The next trip is Sri Lanka, which I know quite well.Elephants are not difficult to shoot (forgive the expression!), but I'll look into a new camera over the next few months.

If you are looking for an inexpensive upgrade, look for a refurbished Canon 3Ti. They are hard to to find but perhaps one of the best & most popular because it has some bells and whistles, but takes excellent photos. The newer Canons have a few improvements but many seem to be for the video function. You can also get refurbished lenses from Canon, (full warranty) or excellent used from KEH or MBP.
A word of caution in Iceland- ask for English menus in restaurants. They have a few unusual "delicacies" like fermented shark or whale testicle beer. If you trust the waiter to recommend the house specialty, ............
