I had a similar problem that turned out to be a poor contact between the card and the reader. My solution is to hold the card in place while downloading and that works fine. Easier and cheaper than replacing the card reader socket on the computer.

Similar problem with my DELL until they replaced the card reader. NO problems now.

I had the same problem a few years ago, also on a HP desktop. I found out if I put the SD card in and then turned on the computer it would read the card. But if I inserted the card after the computer was on, it would not read the card.

I had an issue with the built-in on my Macbook pro. Turned out there was lint or something in there. After careful extraction using a piece of paper it works fine again. Good luck -- they are handy
