Help please
Need some help. The original photo is a scan of a 35 mm slide of my father-in-law I took in N. Ireland at his home. As you can see by the newspaper it was quite some time ago. My wife and I both like the photo because it really is typical of her dad. What I in particular donâÂÂt like is the legs of his pants. I guess I have improved it some but every time I try to do something else to make the legs of his pants look better I wind up basically making it look like the original. Suggestions would be appreciated. We were going to have this printed as a metal print.
Thanks in advance for anybody answering this post.

The vest too, is under exposed on the original slide I am sure. Over all contrast is too high. Scan at much lower contrast. Kodachrome in harsh lighting?
As you can see from your own modification, there is a lot of noise in the dark areas.
Yes the noise in the dark area is what bothers me. Unfortunately I don't have the slide anymore to rescan. Thanks for the look.

This is about all I could do with it. And not great either. Try re-scanning and if you need help with that find a friend who is a scanning guru. If you had shot a digital today like that as a Raw, I could fix it right up (perhaps you could too).
Is this any better? Very slightly.

Yes better than mine. May be about as good as it gets as I don't have the original slide anymore. Thanks

If you have photoshop or elements you can create a layer that is all black except for the pants and vest and then play with just those items to try and correct both the exposure and noise. I think the TV looks better dark in the original. If you have already tried this sorry for my lame post.
I also find the white "trash can" distracting.

I did too, I was going to suggest that he simply crop the photo to remove the trash can not sure the legs are needed for the overall photo. IMHO.

I know how we can get caught up in some small aspect of a picture sometimes. In this case I think you're worrying about something that's just not important to the composition of the picture. You want an image to remind you of your father in law. His pants don't have anything to do with that. It's the picture of his face, the expression, his love of keeping up with things going on in the world, that you want to express. The original does it. No need to worry about his pants. No one looking at this image is going to notice his pants. Do te best you can with the color balance and skin tones. Forget the pants.
Your right. Thanks for putting this in perspective. Sometimes I worry too much about the picture rather than the content.
