My daughter went from Racine WI to Carbondale IL at bottom tip of IL, intending to go back home after the eclpse. From 2:30 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. they only went 200 miles, about haflway home and had to stop for the night. They said it looked like everyone in Chicago had come down there to watch. The highway north was a parking lot much of the time, and they finally gave up and took some back roads. Luckilly they found a decent motel to stay.
Went to Columbia, SC for thw eclipse. MY return to a base in Ga was to be 3hr 15min, took 6hrs 30min. Never again.

We never left home, photographed the whole thing in my back yard.
After seeing the traffic tie up in Oregon on TV. I'm glad I stayed home. Can you just imagine how many vehicles ran out of gas. It's bad enough having to drive in a Blizzard three different times. Once when it took me 8 hours to drive an 16 mile distance. Glad I'm retired.

Took my husband 8.5 hours for a 4.5 hour drive.
Took us about 2-1/2 hours to go 30 miles...
Both northbound and southbound lanes of I-65 north of Nashville were packed, traffic moved at a snails pace

Shot it from the front porch of my office.
Next time, I won't be as lucky
My story, 3 hrs down to Hobkinsville, on the way back, we waited and left after the completion while a lot left right after total. We were sitting on I69 talking to the guys next to us, they left after the total, we waited another hour and half and were at the same place on the highway. After being on the road for 3 hours we we had gone 30 miles, for the first two hours we only went 14 miles. We ended up taking 7 hours to get back home.
We drove up from my sister's home in Cheyenne to a private ranch near Glenrock, Wy that belongs to a friend of hers. We had a 10,000 acre ranch to ourselves - it was fantastic! The drive back from Glenrock to Cheyenne would normally be 2 1/2 hours on I-25, but this trip took over 6 1/2 hours! My wife and I are staying with my sister for another day before we attempt the drive back home to Albuquerque.
Walked out of my office to the harbor breakwall (5 minutes away) at 12:45...photographed until 2:30...walked back to the office and had an ice cream on the way back...man that was rough.

I've seen articles about that - warnings before the eclipse and articles about the traffic afterwards.

We planned on watching it from our place, 80% but it was cloudy so we watched in on TV Great show but probably not as nice as being in the grove. Not to worry though because we saw the eclipse a few years back 20 miles from the house and no traffic on the return.
...I thought it was worth the wait...!
It was a long 4 minute walk to the neighbors for a nice brunch and eclipse viewing. The walk home was a few seconds longer as the dog had to make a pit stop. LOL

I'm in Clearwater, Fl. between Tampa and the Gulf of Mexico and basically 30 minutes (max) from the beach. I went to Clearwater Beach in hopes of getting shots of people on the beach watching the Eclipse. Very few there seemed to care or notice even though we were in the 80-85% of totality area. I stayed on the beach until it was about 60% and then moved to the Clearwater Library where they were having a "watch party". There were 40 or 50 people on the top floor (observation roof) of the library (about 8 stories above ground level in Coachman Park, which is right on the inter-coastal part of the gulf). So I went back down to the park. There were probably a max of 8-10 people there with glasses or other devices for watching. So, I went home and watched it on TV. As a photography event on the beach and nearby areas, it was a bust. I got better photos of the birds and animals than the people.
