The wife and I are planning a 2019 Africa wildlife photographic safari (Boatswana/Tanzania) and seeking recommendations for reliable
outfitters. i've identified "Road Scholars", and BushTracks as potential outfitters. If you have experience
with a reliable outfitter I would love to hear your recommendation. Thank you.

I'd recommend OAT- Overseas Adventure Travel -- www.oattravel.com
We have traveled with them on three separate occasions. SE Asia, Europe and Africa. OAT limits the number of people to 12-15.

I've only been to Africa once, using Abercrombie and Kent to find a guide and arrange the three week itinerary. There were four of us (two couples) in our party, and it worked out extremely well. For the most part, we used private transportation as well as the guide (a retired professor), generally by Land Rover but a couple of times air.

We find a photographer whose work and leading is exceptional, then check out their web site for Africa bound safaris. About five years ago, we went with Mark Comon of Paul's Photography in Torrance, CA. He coordinated with Abercrombie & Kent. Flew from Samburu to Lake Nakura to the Masai. Only one long drive to get to the Rift Valley. A&K first class all the way. Three Land Rovers, four per vehicle.
Next year we're going to Botswana with Piper MacKay. In our opinion, the best, most original safari organizer. She works through a group that provides her vehicles designed for photographers - and has used many of the same guides for 7 years. So they understand her demanding requirements for getting the best "lit" shots. Expect to be up before dawn, shoot during daytime (working with tribes who know her well for portraits), and capturing sunsets. Her URL is www.pipermackayphotography.com
Enjoy!

Botswana and Tanzania! That will be quite the tour covering a LOT of miles (it's close to 2K miles from Gabarone, Botswana, to Dodoma, Tanzania).

I highly recommend Odysseys Unlimited. I took their Wildlife Tour a few years ago that was South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. They specialize in small groups (nothing over 24 people) - out in the bush one day we were in the tall land cruisers with enough vehicles so everyone had a window seat, and I saw another tour vehicle where people were just crammed into it and just about crawling over each other trying to see a leopard. They just really take care of their clients and I found the tour to be really well paced.

I agree, OAT is excellent particularly the small groups. Went to SE Asia and Peru with them. BUT, they are not a photography specific company. I would probably use them for Africa but not if photography was my main purpose. Great company!

A couple friends of mine, me included did a trip this year in late May early June me to Tanzania for the "Great Migration." We utilized the services of Proud African Safaris. They are an American owned Company in partnership with a Native Tanzanian. Without going into great detail it was an amazing trip with wonderful and experienced guides. The accommodations in Arusha as well as in the Bush were four and five star. Look them up on the the internet and don't be afraid to call and ask questions. A truly wonderful experience. Yes, we saw all of the big five on the trip as well as many, many other animals the Serengeti has to offer. These folks were truly first class without breaking the bank!

We did a wildlife safari about 3 years ago during the dry season (which I liked because it did force the animals to congregate near watering holes). We used Wilderness Safaris (http://www.wilderness-safaris.com/countries/botswana). They are an intermediary and do not book directly, or least they did not at the time. We booked the tour through Ultimate Safaris out of Washington (state). The tour was phenomenal. The accomodations were excellent as was the food, and the guides were extremely knowledgeable. While not inexpensive, they were well worth the money. Have a friend who is an avid photographer and he booked a tour through them that actually had professional photographers giving shooting advice during the tour.

I would strongly recommend them
