I would guess that it would be okay ONLY with the appropriate filter on the lens.

Electronic viewfinder can't hurt your eyes but the intense light on the sensor can damage it.

Well, you have two eyes, so after viewing the sun, you'll still have one left. Try it and let us know how it turns out.

I'll bet quite a few people will lose their eyesight as a result of this eclipse. Have you ever burned ants with a magnifyining glass???? WELL THAT'S WHAT YOU'D BE DOING TO YOUR EYES. Or your sensor.

You still need a solar filter so you don't fry your camera. But many solar filters for cameras don't filter enough UV and IR to be safe for viewing with an optical viewfinder. On the other hand, an EVF is always safe. Even if you do burn up your camera.

It's even possible to view the eclipse with no viewfinder at all.

Nonsense. An electronic viewfinder simply cannot get bright enough to damage anyone's eye. Just as one cannot go blind by looking at the screen on the back of the camera, or by turning up the brightness level on the computer monitor to maximum.

Haven't heard (yet) of the old fashioned pinhole in a box trick where you view the resulting image created on the opposite side inside the box. I'll let the pros take fabulous photos of this event then I'll enjoy them with both eyes and my camera will rest in its bag.
