You need to find out what aspect ratio you need first , then you can use a cropping tool to get that ratio. Without the proper ratio that tall thin guy is going to print out as a short fat guy or vice versa. Sometimes you can add a border so you don't lose any of the photo when you crop. This is the easiest way I can think of. I hope it helps.

Hello to everyone! I'm new to the posting section but have read and enjoyed everyone else's post.

Please remember the old saying "there are no dumb questions" when I ask a question.

I need to know how to reduce the size of a photo in order to get it printed correctly on line. Every time I submit one for a banner or bumper sticker or even sometimes just a photo, the on line photo gets chopped up and it is not what I want printed.

I use iphoto and Picasa for my picture editing. Thanks in advance for your help!

Use the crop tool and choose the size crop that is the same size as the final print output. There's usually somewhere in the crop tool settings a place to choose the ppi or resolution you want to print at. It will print exactly the same without the printer just hacking off what it thinks it needs to hack off.

Fast Stone makes an excellent reducer and it's free. Also an excellent viewer - that's free as well.

So glad you started this thread, I used to use iphoto a lot for my quick editing, I took some great shots whilst skiing and decided to make an iphoto book, exactly the same thing happened to me, I was soooo disappointed.

Someone mentioned to me that it was the lab, they don't seem to care, they just print and I should have taken it or sent it to a more professional set up. Personally I'm not so sure, I think also it cold be something to do with the ratio, I just cropped and hoped for the best.

Love to get an opinion.

Here is an obvious suggestion: ASK YOUR PRINTER. ALYN

Robin; If you want to, or have to resize for e-mail click on
"Tools", go down to "Options" and use the slider to resize.
Send a photo to yourself to see how high or low a resolution you can send. I keep it between 800 and 1200 for several photos. Give it a try. Good Luck

One of the first questions I ask a client is how is the photo to be used. Then I know how to shoot it.

Maybe I have misinterpreted your post, but i suspect that you are having problems with the aspect ratio of your image being incompatible with the aspect ratio of the prints you have ordered.

You mention "bumper stickers" and "banners" both of which would have aspect ratios vastly different from the 3:2 or 4:3 of the images which you may be sending. A banner or bumper sticker on the other hand may have an aspect ratio of 1:10. perhaps 1:20. You simply cannot fit a relatively fat image into a narrow slot.

A bumper sticker or banner would most likely be 2:10 or 3:10. Most bumper stickers I have seen sold at retail are approx 3 inches high and 10 inches wide.

The original question has more to do with "Desk Top Publishing" than the actual resizing of photo files.
In this case the end result is intended to be a "bumper sticker". These are generally approx 3 inches tall and roughly 10 inches wide. To use a photo without distortion, resize it to the HEIGHT that is needed and save that as File1.jpg. Then in a photo or graphic editing program such as Windows Paint, Corel Paint Shop Pro or whatever you have and create a BLANK graphic that is 3 inches high by 10 inches wide. Then copy File1.jpg and 'paste' it into the blank graphic and place it where you want it to go. Now you will have the rest of the previously blank graphic as a workspace to add text, another graphic, etc.

If anyone else needs help with something like this, feel free to contact me via PM as I do this on a regular basis for small companies around where I am.

I have used Irfanview and found it to be flawless and free from Cnet.com. here is the link: http://www.irfanview.com
Hope you can now resize your pictures without any problems.

For that sort of photography you really need to use Gimp (foc) or Photoshop if you have lots of money to spare. It is also possible to use Irfan View.

You really cannot expect accuracy with things like Picasa.

Now I do not use bumper stickers as that is an invite for people to sit on your boot lid trying to read and with a limit of 110km that is asking for trouble
