Money Orders as payment.

papa,
On this forum, there is a
Feedback and user rating system It should be used when selling or purchasing -
I commend you for supporting grandpa in this thread but looking at his profile
there no feedback info... and prospective buyers should check this out before entering into negotiations or deals. So with no info provided, it is hard to judge how the transaction would work out...
Quick way to find the feedback for an individual is via the
User List - after finding the member, click on the username link and read the profile which includes member feedback.

Better safe than sorry. A Money Order would cost you money, and PayPal would cost him money. As you say, there is no guarantee that he would send the item, although expecting payment before sending the item does make sense. It's a situation built on trust, but if there is no basis for trust...
Exactly, he expected payment before shipment and brought up the trust issue so I just pointed out that trust is a two way street. Result: no deal between us. Really I am sorry I ever posted anything about it but was just curious about "grandpa". One poor guy misunderstood another's post and went off like a stick of dynamite. I wish I could delete this whole post!

For a seller, the problem with Paypal is ... Paypal (almost) always sides with the buyer.
They give the buyer 180 days to change their mind, IMO, not fair to the seller.

I guess I should have not responded for fear of upsetting some poor soul. I certainly meant no disrespect or implications that the OP selling the items was less than honest.
Hey DaveO, I think everyone except "papa" got it. His short fuse reminds me of a quote from some Shakespeare play: me thinketh thou dost protest to much or something like that. Good shooting to all......"papa" & "grandpa" included.

Thanks for posting this Shellback. Yes, if buyers would just use this great feature it could be the difference between a sale and a no sale. Thanks again and good shooting to you!

Don't let him discourage you. He is on the site doing basically nothing but buying and selling and disparaging people. I don't believe he has ever posted in the Photo Gallery. That's why I didn't bother continuing with him in the Main Photography Discussion portion of the forum. Very inappropriate. So many pics to take, so little time!

If you do not feel confident paying this gentleman with a money order, then just move on. He may be incredibly honest and Incredibly reliable, but if money orders are not within your comfort zone then the decision is an easy one. There is a risk any time you buy used online from a private source. Will I get the product at all or will I be ripped off? Will the product arrive in poor condition or broken? Will the product I received not represent what was described? These are all issues anyone purchasing online must face. Have you bought a lot of used equipment online from other people?
I have been using money orders as one way to pay for mail orders for 50 years, including on this site within the past week. As a buyer, it is one of my preferred methods. Why? A postal money order sent through the USPS via a traceable method gives you as a buyer strong legal recourse in case of any problem. Failure to ship would be mail fraud, and postal authorities will aggressively investigate and prosecute. A money order will cost you $1.20. Certified mail with return receipt is about $5 above first class. As one who was recently a victim of credit card fraud resulting from business not on this website, my family and I believe that is cheap enough insurance. It also protects the seller against the possibility of a bad check from a buyer. He can get his funds immediately.

I only use paypal - it is bulletproof, and if the seller is lying about the condition or saleability, you have recourse. As a buyer, aside from the misrepresentations that can be made, there is always the issue of legality - how does a buyer know if the item was not stolen?
I will not buy from anyone who insists on any other form of payment - there are too many opportunities for fraud and deception on both sides. They are easy for a buyer to fake, and it is just as easy to receive a money order and not ship goods - and there is no recourse in either situation.

Also, the fee for Paypal isn't that much and either party can pay it. Works for me.
I don't see why this is an issue. Two people disagree on how to transact a sale. So don't.
I know on the woodworking forum I belong to it is common to send a personal check. Some sellers wait for the check while others ship as soon as you say check is in the mail.
The best was a $200 check of mine that didn't get cashed. I contacted the seller who told me he didn't want the money. He just wanted the item to go to somebody who wasn't just grabbing a freebie.
Sometimes having faith in our fellow man pays off. Sometimes it doesn't.

I'm looking for a guy that will do that with an 800mm Nikon lens.

No discouragement here. I really am glad when some, by their posts, let me know I need to add them to my "ignore list" never to be heard from again by me. I love the "ignore list". Thanks for the kind words and good shooting to you.

You get it! One of the few who do. All this mess about trust is just nonsense. Thanks for the excellent explanation.
