Most of the issues noted are true - or reasonably close. I lived in Gilbert, Phoenix and Glendale for the 10 years prior to moving a year and a half ago. I hate hot weather, but really liked the Phoenix area. It's very easy to get around - the north-south streets are numbered ("Streets" to the east of Central, and "Avenues" to the west). The east-west streets are named - and relatively easy to remember. The only thing disturbing the easy to navigate grid layout is the occasional outcropping of rock - small mountains, if you will. My biggest complaint in the traffic pattern was a general unwillingness to go when the light changes to green - and especially in the left turn bay, where on occasion they never go at all!!! Once started, however, the street speeds almost always are well above the posted limit.

The constant street work can be frustrating, but I'd rather have that than the potholes forever in other cities! There is a lot of traffic, but the city still is easy to get around - mostly. Just don't be driving when a microburst comes along or when a Habub rolls across the valley!!!

I coach girls' high school basketball (my St. Mary's girls were 2012 National Champions, and all 8 got major D1 scholarships!!!), and the facilities around the city are better than in some other areas where I've lived.

Phoenix indeed is close to two good ski areas, and Sedona, Jerome and other interesting attractions are nearby. Sky Harbor is not a bad airport, and there are several smaller airports available to private pilots.

I moved to Phoenix from Palm Springs, where I had lived for 20 years (out of the frying pan into the fire). There are obvious similarities; I much prefer Phoenix - especially considering the state to which California has fallen. I've seen it over 100 degrees, and pouring rain in Phoenix, but everything is well air conditioned, and passable even for me! Again, I like the Phoenix area! (Even though there's a lot of truth in the post!)

Loren - currently in Baguio City, Philippines

1. 'Phoenix' actually consists of Scottsdale, Chandler, Tempe, Mesa,Gilbert, Glendale, Peoria, Tolleson, Avondale, Goodyear, Litchfield Park, Buckeye, Sun City, Sun City West, Sun City Grand, Sun Lakes, Surprise, Laveen, Youngtown, Apache Junction, Gold Canyon, and half of the Mexican border.

2. The morning rush hour is from 4:00 am to noon.

The evening rush hour is from noon to 9:00 PM.

Friday's rush hour starts on Thursday morning.

3. The minimum acceptable speed on most freeways is 85 mph. On Loop 101, your speed is expected to match the highway number.

Anything less is considered 'wussy'.

4. Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere.

For example: cars/trucks with the loudest mufflers go first at a four-way stop; the trucks with the biggest tires go second. However, in the East Valley, SUV-driving cell phone-talking moms ALWAYS have the right of way.

5. If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear ended.

6. Never honk at anyone. Ever. Seriously.

It's an offense that can get you shot.

7. Road construction is permanent in Phoenix.

Detour barrels are moved around for your entertainment during the night to make the next day's driving a bit more exciting.

8. Watch carefully for road hazards such as drunks, dogs, barrels, cones, cats, mattresses, shredded tires, rabbits, vultures, javelinas, roadrunners, and the coyotes feeding on any of these items.

9. Maricopa Freeway, Papago Freeway and the 'I-10' are the same road.

~~SR202 is the same road as The Red Mountain Freeway.

~~Dunlap and Olive are the same street too.

~~Northern and Shea are the same street.

~~Also Glendale Avenue becomes Lincoln Drive.

~~Jefferson becomes Washington, but they are not the same street.

~~I-17 is also called The Black Canyon Freeway as well as The Veterans Memorial Highway.

~~The Superstition Freeway is also known as US 60.

~~The 101, 202 and 303 remain a large mystery to most of us.

~~It is not yet determined if there is a Red Mountain and a San Tan orjust a Red/Tan Mountain.

~~The SR51 has recently been renamed to Piestewa Freeway because Squaw Peak Parkway was too easy to pronounce.

~~SR101 is also the Pima Freeway except west of I-17, where it is known as the Agua Fria Freeway. The I-17 is the Black Canyon Freeway and The Veteran’s Memorial Highway.

~~Lastly, Thunderbird Road becomes Cactus Road but, Cactus Road doesn't become Thunderbird Road because it dead ends at a mountain.

10. If someone actually has their turn signal on, it has been 'accidentally activated.'

11. If you are in the left lane and only driving 70 in a 55-65 mph zone, you are considered a road hazard and will be 'flipped off' accordingly. If you return the flip, you'll be shot.

12. For summer driving, it is advisable to wear potholders on your hands.

13. Please note that there are many, MANY more issues to the phenomenon of driving in Phoenix -- like the 4-cars-through-a-red-light rule -- but these will at least get you acquainted with our unique life on the road.
Only someone from the Phoenix area would understan... (show quote)

You forgot that they are notorious for driving the wrong way on the freeways , happens all the time.

Speaking about freeways, I left Los Angeles mainly because of the freeways. Don't you worry, you'll never see me in Phoenix AZ. By the way, I live in Phoenix, Oregon. Although it's a pleasure living here, it is growing. Don't you worry, if the freeway says 55 you better do 55 or get a ticket.

It's not the freeways that are frustrating. It's the lack of them. Road rage is now a hobby. Road rage shootings are more like sporting events than crimes due to the frequency. It's 109-111 today, so we turned off the deep fryer and went to air-fried taters and meat. We need all of the electric for the air conditioner. Car dealers now offer built-in scabbards for your door mounted AR-15 or steering column mounted holsters for your Glock 17 as a very affordable option. Extra mags are stored in beautifully appointed custom console pockets. I have to stop now. Its getting to be too much fun.

My sister used to live in Mesa, and my cousin used to live in Scottsdale. They both retired and moved to Prescott this year. They have regained their sanity because they actually have seasons up there in the mountains. Although I live in Peoria Illinois, I have spent some time in what I like to call "The Valley of Death", so I understand and agree with all you have said here.

This is so true. One exception.....
10. If someone actually has their turn signal on, it has been 'accidentally activated.' Unless you are in Sun City and there the turn signals are permanently on regardless of where the driver is going straight or turning either direction opposite of what the signal is indicating.

I drove down, E. to W., I-10 with my left turn signal on for I don't know how long. I think the Aliens are activating the turn signals just to get a good laugh.

You folks simply do NOT understand the logic of the left turn signal in Phoenix. Whenever you leave your garage, engage the left turn signal. After all, you will eventually turn left.

LOL! the street/avenue is the same in St Petersburg, Fl. All of the east west roads are Avenues and all of the North/South roads are Streets. Therefore it is possible to live at the corner of 1st Ave East. and 1st Street North. By the way... the 2 first avenues are divided by Central Avenue. It really gets confusing when someone that lives there tell you that they are a 1st and 16th. If you aren't careful and don't ask, then it could be 1st street North and 16th ave West or 1st street South and 16th ave West or what ever.. you have a 1 in 4 chance of finding it on the 1st try.

In Phoenix they both run east & west. Avenues are west of central, and streets are east of Central. I drove to 2227 xxx street and wound up 44 blocks east of where I was supposed to be. I stopped a mailman and inquired as to where the people lived, and he said he'd never heard of them. I thought I was in the twilight zone--never made that mistake again.

As true as all the above is, I'll take driving here over driving in Miami or Boston. In Miami you have either very old slow drivers, or South Americans on crack. Boston has the craziest streets that narrow to 3/4 of a lane and then go to a roundabout. Playing chicken is their favorite sport. So the desert makes for easier driving!
