This was shot during a partial eclipse with no filters as the sun was dropping behind the rising horizon; with a Canon EOS 6D and EF 70-300L zoom at 300

Very nice.
Thank you. Since I didn't want to damage the camera sensor or my retina, I basically pointed the camera in the right direction, set it at ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/4000 of a second and focused on infinity. I centered the sun by looking at a reflection inside the view finder. Basically I guessed... First time I ever took a direct photo of the sun.

I've taken hundreds of sunrise/sunset photos and there is usually enough atmosphere that I never worried about it.
Might have to rethink or at least research that a bit.
Edit: I use an evf so any damage would only be to sensor but I'm gonna ck this out a bit.
Gorgeous, rmorrison! I shot some of our gorgeous sunset tonight, but since I have to shoot through a screen, they're not worth posting. But I enjoyed watching it!
