My wife and I enjoy travelling, and when we return home, enjoy putting together a DVD slide show with the best of our travel shots. This allows us to easily enjoy our memories as well as share them with others - the DVD slide show format ensures that we've edited the number down to something that can be viewed in a reasonable time period. Up 'til now I've been using 'Memories on TV' to create the slide/video/music shows, but am not satisfied with the image quality that gets played back on our TV (LG 55" 1080P) due to the compression during conversion from hi-res stills to the DVD.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a comparable program that can produce a DVD while still retaining the high image resolution of the original images?
Note - I don't have the capability to burn Blu-ray disks, which understandably may limit my options...
I use Proshow Producer for my slide shows. I am pleased with the professionalism it gives me and I have no complaints on the quality it get.

It may not be the kind of software you think you want, but I use Corel's Video Studio for this purpose. It is a full-featured video editor but at a reasonable price and it is IMHO outstanding for production of video-form slide shows. It is easy to use and you can produce good slide shows almost immediately, but it includes enough features that you will learn to take advantage of special features as you use it. You can burn blue-ray disks with it, if you wish, but I've never needed to.
It is available on a 30-day trial basis so you might want to give it a try.

I use the Roxio suite for about everything DVD/Blu-ray related, it also works well on CD's etc. It is fairly large and uses drive space and memory, but I've always gotten consistently good results. I have upgraded it over the years and am now on the latest version with no ill effects.

Gaahhhh!!! Too...many...choices. All I want to do with my iMac, is make a slide show with captions, explaining each slide...and save it to a DVD or thumb drive my Windows friends can use. I digitized hundreds of my father's and my old slides and I want to describe the people and/or location in each slide so after I go to that great dark room in the sky, the images will have some meaning to my descendants. Enlighten me, oh Great Master Po, what should this insignificant amateur use? I know, I could research them all given time, I just figure you could probably name the best off the top of your head.
I am a new user of Pro Show Gold and love it. I save to 750p since you're eye can't discern any increased sharpness beyond that on a TV screen. And keep your photos at their highest resolution for starters.

I use iMovie, it's in the App Store and it's free. There are a lot of transitions available, and you can access all your music and photos. My only issue is at the beginning of your slide show, it seems like there is no option where to start on your time lien. I've ben inserting a "black frame, and then fading in from there. Give it a try, it might be what you are looking for. You will have to find something different to burn your DVD as iDVD isn't offered or supported any longer. Lots of luck and keep smiling :) Mike
you can give CC Lightroom a try they have a very friendly slide show module the res looked good. I have used windows movie maker its ok but not the best and easy to use. Mike
Thanks to all for your suggestions - they give me an excellent start in making a choice.
Pro Show Gold is absolutely the way to go. Used it for years

Windows 7 has a really excellent, easy to use programme called Windows DVD Maker...does a great job with pretty much all the needed features you want, I've been using it for years despite having some more sophisticated programmes over the years...sadly Windows decided to delete it from later operating systems...
