Greg (ggttc) and I made our solar filters today. I cut a cardboard template to fit step up rings for two of our cameras, then cut the filter film. The filter film is secured inside the ring with rubber cement to minimize puckering. We then tried them out on the full sun.
First sun shot is with Nikon D810 and Nikkor 200-500 at 500 mm, f/7.1 1/500 ISO 200
The second sun shot is with the trusty old Canon SX 50, at 149 mm (in digital zoom), f/5/6 1/160 ISO 125
1. Trimming the polymer filter film from Thousand Oaks Optical

2. Tamping the film into the ring with rubber cement and a Q-tip

3. Nikon D810

4. SX 50 (with some chromatic aberation, but still pretty acceptable)

Thanks, ky41c! Yes, it's a large sunspot that's been active for a while.

Thanks, aammatj! I appreciate you taking a look.
took same pictures 2 days ago , sun spot a little higher and to the left[ san diego ] , should take one shot every 3 days for a month , that is one sun revolution .using a older 800mm nik prime lens on a crop sensor , and the right film type filter .

It was kind of a "proof of concept" thing. I didn't think we were going to get under the tripod's gimbal head with any thing less than laying flat on your back ( at 2 o'clock EDT its an almost vertical shot)...But found the right chair etc.
She made the filters under my supervision...That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Looks like it's worth getting the filters. Thanks for the preview.

Thanks for your visit, one shot! It definitely is worth getting the filter.
Nice. I like that bending light. I have a similar one. Very handy. Good luck with the eclipse.
Thanks for the thumbs up, longshadow!
