The Adorama one I saw was a refurbished DEMO. I wonder if that makes a difference?

I sell professional camcorders. Sony Panasonic for example. You are correct. When a dealer orders a demo unit or one to "show" and one to "go" they get a nice discount off the dealer cost. They are to keep the one to show for a pierod of months. But they can sell the demo at any price they want to. I think in the example of prices the Adaram unit was purchased at a discount from Nikon as a "show" therefore they can sell it at the lower cost. I have bought Nikon lenses at a good discount this way. I bought a 200-500 lens from Adarama this way last month. My D500 was also purchased as a certified refurb. I'm happy with both purchases. Hope this helps.

I particularly can't understand why anyone would ever go for a used camera that is a lot more expensive than a certified refurbished one.

A quick observation. Most posters here agree that purchasing refurbished was preferable to buying used. If that was the standard case how would we as photographers ever resale our used gear? Basically this would force us to "trade" in our older gear for a much lower price, so the manufacture could "refurb" and resale at a higher price? It seems to me we cant have it both ways.

I have purchased used equipment and for the most part have been satisfied with the gear and have used it without any failures (mostly lens). I do like to purchase bodies new...

It's like buying a "certified" used car or just a used car. I think they put a little more love, for a higher price in the certified used car.

Don't worry about it. Buy what you want to buy and from who you want to buy from

I agree..Certified refurbished from the manufacturer is the way to go rather than used.Welcome to UHH

Question: Is a refurbished camera purchased by someone and used for a couple of years, considered a refurbished camera or a used camera if that person wishes to sell it?(or a certified used refurb?) Food for thought.

It is hard to argue like you said how someone will invest more for a used camera than a refurb one. As you surely know a refurb camera has been inspected by the importer and brought to specs if that was the case.
Cameta Camera sells refurbs and offers a one year warranty on them.
Like you, I cannot understand the difference in prices either.

Refurb only if sold by a dealer that specifies it is a refurb camera. After a couple of years of use it is no longer a refurb but a used camera body.

My Adorama refurb was delivered today. It may have been a demo unit (shutter count was 8675). I still like the savings vs other purchase options.

Inside the box, the camera was enclosed in plastic and bubble wrap. Other components were also wrapped in plastic and looked like new. The only missing item was the manual (I downloaded a copy from the web). I couldn't detect any cosmetic defects. After charging, the battery comes up as new in status menu. I updated both firmware and distortion data (each were one version behind the latest). Time of day was set to late 2014 before being updated. The first picture taken received file name DSC_0100.

I get a 90 day limited warranty from Nikon and I added the 3 year "New Leaf" extended warranty for $49.

I have no problem with buying a Demo vs a returned refurbished item. I was just wondering if a Demo gets discounted differently. If it does, I will keep an eye out for demos.

Update: I see jccash addressed this above. Thanks.

Which, by the way, actually answers the question originally posed by the OP.

It's just a used camera unless it is again sent to the factory and refurbished.

Sounds logical to me. Thanks , William.

After being used for 2 years, it is a used camera. Refurbished cameras are mainly dealer overstocks that are returned to the factory and then are inspected by a technician, for Canon that is why they carry the same warranty as a new camera.

I have NEVER bought used camera gear that disappointed me! It's all been better than expected.

I have bought used equipment for years. It is important to read or listen to the seller, determine whether the seller is trustworthy, inspect carefully, and make certain that your expectations are in line with your used purchase.

Exactly. Caveat emptor.
