They do, but I'm not aware of a workable replacement for politics, and religion once served an important function. If one considers religion to be "the opiate of the masses" consider what happens when you try to take away one's opiate. I think we are stuck with both for the see-able future.

The US Civil War started in 1861 when Abraham Lincoln, a republican, was president.
