Usually with "panning" the main subject is in focus, or relatively so, and the background is out because the camera is following the moving object. You would have to slow your shutter down on these shots..........

Panned or not, I think these are still nice shots of two boats moving relatively fast. When I'm shooting these type of photos--usually racing hydroplanes or racing skiffs--my aim is to stop the action and get a good shot of the boats and wake spray, not the background so my shutter speeds are in the 1/750- 1/1500 range. Sometimes, if I'm really lucky, I can even stop the propeller which is typically turning at about 6,000 RPM.
