My wife & I have scheduled a cruise (Prague to Budapest) in August 2018. This has been a dream for over 10 years. Obviously, we have ample time to plan for the trip. My mind immediately concentrates on photography. I have Canon: 5D MIII, 7D MII, 24 - 70 f/2.8 II, 70 200 f/2.8 II 50mm f/1.4 and Tamron 17 - 35mm f/2.8. I usually take it all and other necessary gear in a backpack. However, it's a lot of equipment to lug around. It is all insured, so other than the immediate loss of being able to photograph the trip, stolen or lost gear is not an issue. So far, there does not seem to be restrictions for flights - but that might very well change in the near future.

While I would appreciate suggestions about safety, protection, ... that is not the intent of my post. I'm considering renting and/or buying a smaller/compact, high quality camera alternative. I'm also considering renting lenses to accommodate my 5D MIII. My wife has an iPhone 7 plus, and by next August, I may have a 7 or 6 too. Right now I have an antiquated 4S. The imperative is: my desire to capture high quality images. I have storage of images covered.

I've looked at Sony RX10 III at DPReview. Mirror less suggestions are welcomed- if one may be rented. Sony Alpha a9 seems incredible and can be rented. If I go the rent route, I'll provide extra lead time to become familiar with the equipment. Renting is expensive, but does not even approach the cost of purchase. I'm not really looking for financial suggestions. I'll work out the finances.

So, if you feel inclined, please feel free to offer suggestions and if you have taken similar river cruise(s), please let me know the equipment you dragged. Were you happy with the images?

Thanks for your time & feedback.
Appreciatively,
Mark

If I were you I would take the camera you already have and the 24-70 and 16-35 lenses. You will be needing more wide than tele lenses on this trip. I have been to Praque a few times and in my mind it looks much better with wide than tele lens ;)

I know it is tempting to gear down and find some lightweight compact crap camera but in the end you will be much happier with the pics from your 5d. I am not saying the crap camera is actually a crap camera but every compact choice is a step down from what you already have.

In regard to Melk Abbey photo rules: I was there just two weeks ago and the chapel and some other rooms were prohibited. The guide always told us where it was OK and where it was not, and the chapel was clearly marked. Shame about the chapel -- only a novice would use flash, but we all pay the price.

That's really a shame. I'm glad those rules were not in place when we visited. The chapel with its many gilt adornments is truly amazing.

Take an airline that allows shopping carts in the overhead compartments.
I have an Olympus E-PL5 for just such occasions. That way I don't have to book the same trip for the following year so I can enjoy it.

We have taken a similar trip with Viking for 14 days plus Prague. Prague is one of the best kept secrets but you will find that a wide angle, preferably a zoom will allow you the best shots by virtue of the closeness of all your subjects. Some months before going over from the US i had purchased a Nikon 1 with the 10-30 and 30-110 standard zooms. Since that time other lens for the Nikon1 have become available but the reason I chose that system was for it's compact size and weight as I would carry the lenses in my jacket pocket and the camera in my hand with a hand retention strap. It was easy to carry and with the addition of a better shaped grip, was secure and easy to handle while shooting one handed. There may be other cameras that are similar but light weight and quality of the Nikon 1 seems good for the kind of shooting you will be doing. The i-phone will be your backup and selfi camera. You will have a great experience!

I have a book coming out dealing with this very kind of issue. It's based on my more than 20,000 travel photos I've taken on more than 40 cruises which have totaled more than 250,000 miles. Since you already have the Canon gear and presumably know how to use it, I'd carry one body and two zoom lenses (one of the wide angles and the 70-200) with you. Then I'd get a small, very high-quality, more-or-less pocketable camera to bring with you too. My top choice would be either a Fujifilm X100F or a Sony RX100 V (I bring both with the Sony being in my wife's fanny pack and usually reserved for her use). If you don't want a fixed-length lens small camera such as the X100F, I've had great luck with the Leica Type 109, or it's kissing cousin that's made in the same factory, the Panasonic Lumix LX-100. If you don't want to shlep the Canon gear, I've had great luck carrying the Fujifilm X100F, the Sony RX100V and the Olympus Stylus 1s. With those three cameras, which weigh a total of less than 5 pounds and can fit in a small gadget bag under an airline seat, I'd be willing to sail off tomorrow on a year-long cruise to anywhere in the world. Two years ago, I used the Stylus 1s as my only camera on a 3-week cruise to Japan, Siberia, the Aleutians, the Alaskan panhandle and Vancouver. The photos were used to illustrate my book, "The Compleat Olympus Stylus 1 & 1s". While the Stylus 1s has been discontinued, it's still available if you Google stores that have it in stock. I just found a few new ones at Green's Camera World in northern California where the owner agrees with my liking for this model and bought up some of them when they were discontinued. With this combo, the Stylus gives you an f2.8 28-300mm range in a 14 oz camera that produces great images in all but very dim light; the Fujifilm X100F offers you image quality that approaches the Canon in any light; and the Sony RX 100V provides wonderful images and colors while fitting in your pants pocket. Because of this, I'm no longer planning to carry my Olympus OM-D and Fujifilm X-T2 multi-lens outfits on most cruises.

Just an additional note about "NO CAMERAS" rules. Except for a few places such as art museums where works are copyrighted or where the museums derive revenue by selling their own photos, iPhones have pretty much put an end to these rules being seriously enforced as long as you use a small, inconspicuous camera and don't use flash or those focusing lights. Here again, this is a good reason to use a pocket camera such as a Sony RX100 with the flash and the focusing light turned off, and not bringing the camera up to your eye. Ditto for the Leica Type 109 or even the Olympus Stylus 1s. I've taken many photos with all three of these where I'm not supposed to be shooting without any problems. Even if you're stopped, a simple "Sorry." will suffice in most cases. The only notable exceptions are military installations or even strategic structures such as bridges in some countries; especially if these are guarded by soldiers or police. In such cases, PUT YOUR CAMERA AWAY or ASK! What sometimes works is to ask if you can take a photo of the soldier in front of the installation he/she is guarding.

Took that cruise two years ago. It was fantastic. I brought a 6D, a 24-70, and 70-200 which covered all of my needs. You have the reach when needed and good low light capability for inside shots.
