Will try and find one of the post cards my Dad used to send to other operators. They have his old call sign. He has been gone for eight years now, but I think had given up his HAM radio long before.

Here is my setup. With it and its predecessors I got WAC, WAS, and DXCC (222 mixed, 171 CW, 190 phone, 118 on 40, 173 on 20, 164 on 15, and 157 on 10). Much of this with a trapped dipole in my attic and my R 7000 Vertical. As you can see I've been relegated to the cellar. Got my Novice ticket in 1964, followed by my Technician in '65. my General in '78, followed immediately by my Advanced in '78, and my Extra in 1981 when you still had to take a 20 wpm code test to get it. I don't like CW, but use it for getting rare DX and also in contests.

Bud, that's a nice station, and I'm envious of your call! I did get my initials (CKB) and tried to get W4CB when it became available years ago, but there were over 30 applications, so I'll be content with a 5 letter call. Started out as a novice in the 50s but took a 15 years hiatus when I discovered girls and cars (hi hi), but picked it up again in my 30s, got a technician and did AMSAT satellite work for awhile before picking up my general and extra class which I've had for 20-25 years. One nice thing about ham radio: you can take a break for awhile, and it will always be there when you come back. I think hobbies like photography and ham radio go nicely together, so I'm gratified (but not surprised) that so many fellow UHH members are also hams.

My Advanced was KB2FC so when I got my Extra, I watched the issuance of 2x1 calls and was trying to time it to get WF2C. Didn'twant a WE2 call so everything was timing. I sent in for the new call and wound up with my current call. This was a few years before Vanity Calls. Btw, I am a life member of the ARRL. Got it when it was still $100. That was a good deal fo me.

Oh Happy Days. Am now in a retirement Village so no antennas although I do use my 2m one very occasionally. Really nice to see a good set up like yours. I have had my Australian call some 45 years and before that 20 years in the UK. Still have Ham friends since the G3 days.

It is, and waiting for you to get back on the air 😀. Lots of QRP equipment for sale and designs for QRP rigs (especially using some of the new digital modes) is regularly on QST. Rejoin the ARRL, start getting QST, and you'll be ready to get on the air in no time.

You jogged my memory. I thought I had one of his old QSL cards and I found it. This dates back to the late 50's if I'm not mistaken. Wish I knew what happened to all the ones he received that he saved.

For non-hams, QRU means "do you have something for me?". Yes. Your 4 letter call demonstrates to me that you're a serious, experienced, 'ole timer worthy of respect. Tell us about yourself, your ham radio history, and your rig please. Not being nosey, just interested in fellow senior hams that have pursued this great hobby for a long time.

Back in the early seventies the older brother of my first real girlfriend was into ham radios. He had two tall antennas in the back yard. Whenever I questioned him about the antennas, he would only say his hobby was radios. After dating her for about six months, she told me her brother had decided I was okay and would let me see his equipment. She lead me downstairs to a locked door. We waited for her brother to open it. The room was dark except for a lamp at his desk and all sorts of electrical gear. It looked like something from a spy movie. He assured me that he wasn't a spy, just into radios. In fact, he even built radios for other people. He told me about picking up a SOS signal after a earthquake in Asia and helped rescuers locate some of the people. Don't know where he's at today. Would like to know how that hobby played out?
