Can anyone recommend a negative and slide scanner? I'm just a hobbyist, so I am looking for something in the $300-$500 range. My main pursuit was concert photography and Colorado landscape. I have a lot of good concert stuff from the mid-70's to early 80's that I would love to get to print. Being somewhat contrasty, I can't rely on sending them off to convert to digital.

The Epson Perfection Photo series is excellent and very economical. I have the V500. The current version is the V600. Scans flat material, color and B&W 35mm and 120 negatives. At the Epson store for $229.99. May be available elsewhere for less. Specifications:

Epson. I've been using an Epson Perfection 3200 since around 2001. It just keeps working. Yes, I'd like to upgrade to something a bit newer, but this still produces excellent results. This model is no longer available, but any of the newer ones are going to be a good deal.

I have the Epson v550 I got it as a refurbished from Epson and it has worked well for several years. The v600 would be the scanner for sure.

Good luck.

Here's B&H's scanner page. Years ago I had a cheap Pacific Image scanner that worked wonders. Another one of those things that disappeared over the years... (Along with all my slides and negatives)

Thanks everyone. A lot of Epson fans. F8 Forever, I was looking at B&H's scanner guide. In talking with my brother the pro, I might give the Plustek 8200ai a try.

The Plustek 8200 ai is an excellent scanner, especially when paired with SilverFast Pro!

I have 2 Nikon Coolscans (dedicated 35mm scanners) at work but I actually get better results easier with the Epson V700.

So, many on here are recommending the Epson for negative scans .
Is there much noticeable difference with teh results from an Epson and say £350 nikon scanner ?

Well for it's worth, I have a $700.00 Minolta scanner for slides and negatives, and $19.95 Christmas Treet Shop scanner for slides and negatives and I'll be damned if I can see any difference! It's all in the software, it made them both work!

Another vote for Epson - V600 or 700.

Scanning 35 mm. is very slow. I had a Nikon scanner, but I gave up. I will lnever finish. ScanCafe does the best job in high quality scanning. They scanned over 10,000 Kodachome slides for me.
