Good one
... sounds like a buddy of mine who was a Navy Chief, retired now.
My Chief, SCPO Hozack out of NAS Lakehurst was an old salt . Had 12 service stripes on his sleeve , a lifer , and could he drink ! He never showed it though .
He was one hell of a guy , tough as nails and would go out of his way to help you . Great guy .
Thanks Chief wherever you may be .

When I was becoming a chief many years ago, there was a little ditty we had to learn and repeat. It went like this. A chief never drinks, but if he were to drink he never gets drunk, but if he did get drunk he would never fall down, but if he did fall down it would be in such a manner to hide his collar insignia and be mistaken for a junior officer. I guess the continuation of this would be that he would go fishing for these same junior officers if he became inclined to start drinking.

While underway South of Dunedin New Zealand some of us were down in the mess deck playing poker when a shave tail Ensign stopped by our table and in his clipped New England accent said "well, well, I see we are playing poker" to which an old Gunners Mate Chief replied "yep". The Ensign said "we wouldn't be gambling now would we?" Chief Guns said "nope". Ensign says " I guess it would be OK for me to stir up the chips on the table then". Guns looked up at him and said "I wouldn't do that if I wuz you". Ensign withdraws his hand and says "well, just make sure you aren't" and then scurried off
Just goes to show...there's a reason E-7's and above rule.
